Would be the death blow. I sure hope Mexico doesn’t force us to be so harsh. But hey, if they insist on being bad neighbors , I guess our hands are tied. Sure it will be hard on people like my Dad who own places there ( San Miguel de Allende) but it is what it is. Hell I can get to Barcelona for $400 round trip or Bangkok for $500 round trip. Why not encourage Americans to visit countries that aren’t actively trying to destroy us...

Edit- please continue reading thread below before commenting as you are likely just repeating the obvious point that I immediately conceded. The point was to dangle the power of our travel dollar over the Mexican Government’s Head - not to literally ban travel by decree.

I have no desire to go to Mexico, but I also have no desire for the government to tell me where I can and cannot go. I'll pass

This is being driven by corrupt Mexican bureaucrats lining their palms with trafficker money. Find out who they are, how to best target them financially, and nail them. A travel ban is not the answer.

If you really think Mexico is actively trying to destroy the US, maybe you should encourage your dad to sell his real estate in Mexico.

Fair point.

And yet the government already does, based on security and ideological reasons. Maybe the better approach would be a strong suggestion from GEOTUS that people consider patronizing countries that aren’t actively undermining our country. Accompanied with airfare and hotel deals to more pro-American countries from those countries hospitality Industry. Places like Ireland and Thailand and Spain and Portugal and Japan etc.

What does not wanting the US government banning US citizens traveling to Mexico have to do with keeping illegals out of the US?

The US doesn't "ban" US citizens from visiting any country. They just issue various levels of warnings to US citizens, up to a "Do Not Travel" warning for places like Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. You can even travel to North Korea if you receive the necessary validation.

Well, no minimum wage, no OSHA, no income tax (primary revenue coming from sales taxes), no tariffs, no war on drugs (all are legal without a prescription and sold on the open market, but manufacturers are liable in tort), no occupational licenses (private trade organizations offer certifications and the public gets to choose if it's worth it to use a vendor who is certified), no entitlement programs of any kind, etc.

At that point, it wouldn't matter who was a citizen and who wasn't because they would be a net revenue generator (they pay sales taxes and property taxes indirectly through rent), they wouldn't be able to arbitrarily undercut citizen's wages because citizen's would be eligible to work at the same rates, they wouldn't be able to come here to mooch off of welfare because there wouldn't be any. If they wanted to come here and make a living, they'd be coming here to work or starve.

I bet you get a lot less immigrants when you stop paying them to come here and reproduce.

The even more simple solution is to e-verify everyone, place massive fines on businesses that hire illegals, crack down on ss# fraud/tax/entitlement fraud, and get the illegals and their children off of entitlements. If you stop paying them to come and stay here, they will leave or never come in the first place.

I will concede a ban on Mexican travel is not consistent With the role of government . But it would make a GREAT Presidential tweet to let Mexico understand our growing national mood. I would suggest tens of millions of Americans voluntarily making alternative plans after said tweet would be glorious. There is a great big non -Mexican world out there and lazy travelers should be reminded of the possibilities.

I wouldn't bother going to Mexico just because there are so many better places to visit in Central America and the Caribbean.

Taxing remittances would be the death blow. So much of their economy depends on:

Drugs
Remittances

A healthy 40%-50% tax should have been placed on them day one by Trump.

If it leads to a great Twitter post, then it is totally worth it!
