But, but, but 2000 Mules isn't that accurate, even if the American Stasi can use it to prosecute patriots and send them to a DC gulag.

The FBI’s biggest-ever investigation included the biggest-ever haul of phones from controversial geofence warrants, court records show. A filing in the case of one of the January 6 suspects, David Rhine, shows that Google initially identified 5,723 devices as being in or near the US Capitol during the riot. Only around 900 people have so far been charged with offenses relating to the siege.

The filing suggests that dozens of phones that were in airplane mode during the riot, or otherwise out of cell service, were caught up in the trawl. Nor could users erase their digital trails later. In fact, 37 people who attempted to delete their location data following the attacks were singled out by the FBI for greater scrutiny.

Geofence search warrants are intended to locate anyone in a given area using digital services. Because Google’s Location History system is both powerful and widely used, the company is served about 10,000 geofence warrants in the US each year. Location History leverages GPS, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth signals to pinpoint a phone within a few yards. Although the final location is still subject to some uncertainty, it is usually much more precise than triangulating signals from cell towers. Location History is turned off by default, but around a third of Google users switch it on, enabling services like real-time traffic prediction.

The geofence warrants served on Google shortly after the riot remained sealed. But lawyers for Rhine, a Washington man accused of various federal crimes on January 6, recently filed a motion to suppress the geofence evidence. The motion, which details the warrant’s process and scale, was first reported by journalist Marcy Wheeler on her blog, Emptywheel.

Nah, big brother isn't watching... Why can't you accept that our benevolent overlords only have our best interest at heart?

Michael Tracey had a bunch of tweets yesterday about how scary this is.
quote:

The suspect's criminal conduct is alleged to be that he walked into the Capitol at 2:50pm, took a selfie with his wife (who was also arrested), and then walked out at 3:00pm. These were the fruits of an extensive investigation by an agent in the FBI's "Joint Terrorism Task Force"

LINK
quote:

Rebecca Fish -- Assistant Federal Public Defender in Tacoma, WA -- did an excellent, thorough job on this motion. Well worth reading

LINK
quote:

Rather than establishing any basis for probable cause that subjects of the search had committed a crime, the government relied on hypothesis and conjecture that merely "equated presence at the Capitol with criminal activity" -- bizarrely invoking "the pandemic" in its reasoning

LINK
quote:

The warrant was "fatally over-broad and devoid of particularity, and therefore impermissible under the Fourth Amendment." There was never any particularized probable cause cited by FBI -- making it certain that searches were conducted on people who committed no crime whatsoever

LINK
quote:

Federal public defender convincingly argues that the FBI used an unprecedented "modern-day general warrant" to seize personal data of anyone who "could have been" in the approximate vicinity of the Capitol on Jan 6. "Defending democracy" by obliterating bedrock civil liberties

unprecedented.

like the trumpian riot to keep congress and vp pence from counting the EV?

your bottom line: one of the people who may have been involved is trying to keep secret the phone evidence of his location.

Anyone using a smartphone should understand that your location is being recorded. I work in the LEO software business. There is software available to LEO that aggregates location data from twitter, FB, etc. It also collects your friends that you retweet, share links with and connects all of those dots. Many many crimes today are solved using these methods. I can also be used for nefarious reasons.

Does turning off your phone do anything, or does that stuff still run? I have an ongoing debate with a co-worker on this. I think the tracking software runs, regardless if the phone is powered off or not.

hold the frick on...you can hate trump, you can think Jan 6th was an attempt to overthrow the gov

but you can frick right off with thinking general warrents are a good thing. allowing this to go through opens the door for tons of abuse by both sides. Just because its being used by your side now doesnt mean it cant be used against you in the future.

how about...we follow the constitution and not allow this bullshite to begin with no matter which side is in power at the moment?!!

Siege

No that would be Dems in 2018 for Kavenaugh lies

That would be storming a Portland federal building and setting it on fire with a mayor inside.

That would be what happened to target

The Capitol was single file inside. Most respectable and well mannered “siege” ever

with huge irregularities and abnormalities in 7 swing states, also AGAINST polling there

yes, its unprecedented

you pretending it is not makes you the target of free Americans whose civil rights have been stolen

I want a “Insurrection Memorial Wall.l” it should be the biggest of all monuments. The ideal place for it is along the US-Mexican border. Make it 50 foot tall and extend the entire length of the border. The names can be as small as they need to be to make room for all who died during the initial bombardment and assault.

I never posted or even said that.
one of the hallmarks of fanatic posters is attributing stuff to other people who actually know nothing about the topic.

If only they would have been so diligent for 9/11. Or the border.

But for THIS they bring their A+ game. They will leave no stone unturned.

This isn't about Trump. It is about his supporters.

Not just his supporters but citizens willing to stand up for their rights... They need to send a message and they really wanted this to be a bigger event so it would warrant more draconian measures...
