What is illegal about paying hush money?

Nothing, but I think the issue is paying it with campaign funds, which is illegal.

The question they claim is how those funds were reimbursed to Cohen. If those funds came from a commercial account.....who cares. If they came from Trump's personal account, the question would be was Trump also using that particular account to help fund his campaign. If this was an exclusive account independent of contributions to the campaign....no harm , no foul as a matter of law.

The case against Cohen was a reach. I always wondered why he copped a plea. In this case it's a dog with fleas overall....it almost borders on double jeopardy...almost

Remember when sitting President Bill Clinton and Vernon Jordan were setting up Monica Lewinsky in a job in NYC to keep her quiet during the Paula Jones investigation. Remember when Clinton was disbarred for committing perjury during the Jones trial? Remember the Dem outrage and calls for prosecution?

I think Cohen was on the hook for some criminal issues all his own as well, if I recall correctly.

I'm no attorney. What is illegal about paying hush money? What crime is Trump accused of committing by this NY DA? How is paying hush money different than a settlement with an NDA?

From what I have read, the potential issue is not with the payment itself but the fact they had Cohen personally do it and reimbursed him on company books as legal expenses. I’ve seen it said this could be felony manipulation of books, but I don’t know.

When hardly anyone can even figure out what it’s about, you know something ain’t right with it.

That’s true. There is an old saying in politics that when you’re explaining you’re losing. The same would probably apply here. The more confusing the case the harder it is to prove. Juries are going to like things they can easily understand. Confusion is not far from reasonable doubt.

That’s not to say complex crimes can’t be proven as they are all the time; however, if you are going to be the first prosecutor to ever indict a former president, one would think simpler is better.

that the payments (and more accurately the “hushing” that the payments provided) constituted a campaign contribution in excess of the personal limit.

This is a federal campaign finance issue. Has nothing to do with NY State Law or jurisdiction. NY state is preparing to arrest handcuff and process Trump over this?

I think the allegation years ago (and now) is that somehow the money came out of campaign funds without being reported as such.

It has to do with campaign finance laws. Candidates have to disclose assets, transactions, donations, etc. regarding their campaign. This includes any expenditures that would have any effect on your campaign. The accusation is that Trump did not disclose the hush money, which was paid so as not to have a negative effect on his campaign.
