DEARBORN, Mich. (WJBK) - Dearborn is home to the largest mosque in the United States and a significant Muslim community. Stereotypes about Dearborn became a target for "The Simpsons" character Milhouse. On the campus of the University of Mchigan-Dearborn, there were mix reactions to "The Simpsons" treatment of the community and university.

"It was funny seeing it as a cartoon," said U of M Dearborn student Leann Beydoun. "I didn't know whether to laugh about it or to be upset about it."

"It's pretty cool showing how ridiculous the hate is," said U of M Dearborn student Betool Garbie. "I think it's pretty funny."

The segment poked fun at the untrue and unfounded notion that somehow Muslim sharia law prevails in Dearborn.

"'The Simpsons' make fun of everybody," said U of M Dearborn student Mouhamed Bislih. "It was funny. It wasn't offensive, I guess."

However, one student argued ridiculing anti-Islamic bigotry may not be effective.

"I don't think it's a good thing because we can change it by talking, not making fun," he said.

The head of the Council on American Islamic Relations found the Dearborn references humorous.

"'The Simpsons' is a very prolific show," said Dawud Walid. "Now 'The Simpsons' is addressing this anti-sharia fear mongering issue, and perhaps it may gain some currency and that more people will make fun of it."

A leader of the Lebanese community enjoyed the attention.

"Every group really vies for that type of attention, and when you make it to 'The Simpsons,' you've really hit high ground," said Suhehalia Amen, president of the Lebanese-American Club. "I was proud to see that we made it to that level where 'The Simpsons' are actually talking about Dearborn."
