School vouchers are a nice idea in theory but just turn into a grift in reality. Fix the fricking public schools.

Sorry public schools will NEVER be fixed. The only fix is to eliminate them. Vouchers are the first step to accomplish this.

Think of it like Obamacare for health insurance.

Talked to a kid's parents that moved over to the school I coach at, the voucher made it affordable, if not they would have stayed at the public school.

Affordable to people who were teetering on the ability to enroll their kids anyway. This isn't make a difference to the poor and desolate. So, while great opportunity for those parents, I don't agree with the assessment that it will destroy private schools by flooding them with undesirables.

Are you receiving those vouchers too? Or do you have to qualify for it?
I fully expect Louisiana to make it where only certain people qualify.

Even if they make it where everyone gets a voucher it’s still stupid.

I will never change my opinion that your kids going to private school is not a privilege, it’s a perk of working hard to save and putting yourself in a position to afford.

Biggest issue is there are limited seats so this isn't going to empty out public schools like some fear.

One of the dumber arguments I heard against it is that small rural schools need every student dollar possible and just a few students pulling their money out will ruin them.

90% of schools with less than 1000 students don’t live within an hour a private school. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but their demise is greatly overstated.

Yeah that was one of the big arguments up here in rural Iowa communities.

I kept asking the howlers, where are they going to go?

I’m not against vouchers and school choice, but what percentage of Louisiana residents do you think are paying $8,000 a year in property taxes?

Right. Schools aren’t just now accepting anyone like some of the hot takers in here are over confidently stating. Prices aren’t jumping through the roof. Hell half the public school parents don’t even want to be bothered looking at the process.

8K a year for Country Day or Newman????? Maybe Jesuit would take you if you were a really promising student.

If I were a religious school like Jesuit or Holy Cross or Catholic (BR) I would resist taking that money. State money always has strings attached. You cannot maintain your independence.

Hell most are worried the "athletes" will jump to the private schools, not really giving a shite otherwise.

Well if it’s like Florida all the parents will need is confirmation from the religious school to the state of enrollment and the parents can do all the paperwork on their own. Our current school didn’t want to receive directly for this very reason.

i grew up in small school (900 students) 20 miles from a town of about 80k with 2 private schools. We were the desirable school for the town and people purposely moved out there and we didn't accept transfers.

the product was good enough where they wouldn't have lost students, or many at all.

my wife grew up about 45 minutes away from a town of 100k with three private schools. she had about 600 students in her school. i'm sure that somebody would have been willing to spend 2 hours in the car every day to do that, but under no circumstances was the school going to lose more than a dozen students to that kind of deal.

again, i'm not saying i like the whole thing and i think Abbott has done a poor job pitching this, but the arguments from the other side are so stupid and entitled, i tend to side with the voucher people.

We are paying a lot more than $8k in property taxes, and also sending our son to private school because we live in a more rural area and the schools aren’t as good as we would like. $8k isn’t covering tuition, but it would be nice to get some of the more than $20k we paid in property taxes back since our kids are not using the public schools that we are supporting currently.

This quote explains why Democrats hate this proposal so much.

You can flip that around we have a private Catholic school in an old farm town about 40 minutes from 100K city, they are slowly shrinking, hell they are down to 8 man football when they used to be a power house 11 man team. Lots of howlers said they would balloon there enrollment year one.

Saw about 20 kid swing the first year of vouchers.

That's not what I'm talking about. Once you start taking state money you actively invite the vampire into your house.

You pay $20k per year in property taxes in Louisiana?

Congrats! And yeah, I agree you should be able to have a say in how some of it is spent to support schools.

$8k voucher for qualifying* families!

*Qualifying families consist of Families who make $65k or less per year or single income families making less than $50k or are currently enrolled in any other government assisted program such as WIC and EBT

Hate to break it to you, the vampire is already there, at least in Iowa. The Fed vampire has always been there.
