50 year old desegregation case in Avoyelles

Holmes said parties in the 50-year-old court case -- which Holmes has led as plaintiff/intervenor for the past 32 years -- met Tuesday (May 29) for an “open discussion on issues facing the Avoyelles Parish School District.”
Holmes said the U.S. Justice Department or he, as intervenor, could file objections with the federal court if they find anything that still needs to be addressed before closing the books on the deseg case.
Holmes said there were a few issues raised at the meeting.
One was Superintendent Blaine Dauzat’s recent changing of principals at eight of the district’s 10 public schools.
“I told them I don’t want to see us go back to putting white principals at majority white schools and black principals at majority black schools,” Holmes said. “I told them we had worked on that in 2008 and had it satisfied, but this could open a can of worms.”
Dauzat said Holmes’ statement at the deseg meeting dealt with the fact that there was only one black principal in 2008. There are now four black principals in the 10-school district.
“But, I want to note that none of them were hired because they were black,” Dauzat said. “The four of them were hired because they were the best person for the job.”
Of the eight changes, the three that concerned Holmes the most were at Riverside, Plaucheville and Lafargue elementaries.
Riverside is a majority black school that had a white principal and will now have a black principal. Lafargue and Plaucheville are majority white schools that had black principals last year and will have white principals this coming school year.
Dauzat said principals at two of the highest-performing elementaries, Lafargue and Plaucheville, were moved to the two lowest-performing elementaries, Riverside and Bunkie.
Bringing these two principals from highest performing schools to the lowest will not help. The make up of the student body will remain the same.

Hire more black principals, but let me stress they were not hired because they were black.

Seems to me that this guy has a pretty sweet fricking gig and is no hurry to see this case concluded. This guy has milked the legal system for 32 years and what has he really accomplished? The schools still suck dick and he’s now arguing about the number of black principals in the school district. It’s not like he’s trying to solve the Israeli Palestinian peace process. It’s a 50 year old school desegregation case! If you haven’t solved it now, you’ll never solve it.

Well this is blatantly racist

No, it's reality. The two highest and two lowest performing have been that way for 30 years. The two principals won't change a thing.

Rather racist of you to assume the overall makeup of the student body.

Mentioned nothing about Bunkie. I’m familiar with the area, and the “racism” angle is just that, an angle, and complete and utter bullshite. The word gets thrown around so much, it has absolutely no significance anymore.

i went to one of the "highest performing elementary schools mentioned" i don't want to get banned, but guess why these two schools are the highest preforming? lowest minority mix?
I know the ex principal that was at simmesport or "riverside". I can only imagine what hell she was put through while she was the principal there. i saw she was recently transferred to cottonport.
the desegregation in 88 was the worst thing to happen to that parish. the pariah basically had community schools, but some federal arse clown decided it was a good idea to mix it up and star busing kids around the parish so they could blend everyone together. that first week was hell is all i can say.

All of this x 1000! Allen Holmes did not file the original suit because he was concerned about racial equality in the schools. It is pretty well known that he was paid by some higher ups to file the suit to make consolidation happen. These higher-ups wanted to see larger schools for several reasons, one being was for Bunkie to have access to the atheletes in Cottonport at the time. Allen Holmes is a race-baiter but he would have remained in the shadows if not for the backing of these individuals. Worst part is that he still gets toured around the campuses in Avoyelles Parish every year like he is some royalty that has come to check on the peasants. That lawsuit has been the biggest set back in Avoyelles Parish the last 30 years. Now the school board is concerned about parents wanting to open up another charter school. You reap what you sow.

The schools suck, but the lawyers are making a killing.

Judge Parker had a similar deal until people were openly laughing in court that the case wouldn’t ever end while he was alive.
At which point he retired and we actually started making headway.
The schools now are still a shitshow but we aren’t bussing people from Shenandoah to Glen Oaks because fairness.

I have a child that goes to Lafargue. I'm glad the principal is going to Bunkie...she was a snob. And she looked like she hated her job so maybe she'll love being in majority black Bunkie Elem. Trust me, Lafargue has always been one of the top schools in Avoyelles and recent success had nothing to do with their most recent principal.
