Ratings are in even increments.
Many states do not tax military retirement at all.

You dont think the guys day drinking at a dive bar could have serious mental health problems?
Whatever issues they're having certainly isn't being helped by generous monthly subsidies by the VA with little incentives to get a job.

Have you ever been threatened if you didn't provide a diagnosis they wanted?
I was in IT. I had access to the text messaging system that we used to notify vets of their appointments.
Some of the responses were humorous.
Some were sad.
Some were very scary.
We were required to notify the authorities of any communication that appeared to be threatening to our staff or to the patient (self harm). There were a lot of those.

The vast majority of that compensation is not disability the way you think it is.
Its maybe hundreds of dollars a month... maybe a thousand.
And yes.. anything that medically impacts you while you serve is compensated for.
With that said, people who didnt serve sometimes don't quite understand that even not combat veterans, when they served, their life, 24/7 was dictated and controlled by someone else. Most can't wrap their head around that level of sacrifice or what that truly means.

It has drastically increased
Yeah. It coincides with the graph perfectly. It spiked right when we went to war for two decades, which is expected.

If they stayed in for 20 years, they knew what it was about, and it must have been worth it to them. BAH, military discounts, full medical, more favorable lending terms, GI Bill, pension and possible disability pay must count for something or they wouldn't do it.

Half of what you listed would be available during one stint, not 20 yrs.
People that serve 20 yrs don't do it for benefits.

Less than 1% of the population serves despite all those benefits and less than 1% of those who do ever have anything to do with combat.
If you chose not to sign the dotted line, thats fine, but there's no need to spin it or water it down.

What? That makes zero sense. They aren't staying solely out of the goodness of their hearts. The military makes it worth their while both during and at the end.

That's true; it's certainly not for everybody, but I don't believe it's all solely benevolent service. That's the shroud the military will sometimes wrap themselves in when it's perfectly okay to also say they are in it for the benefits. Whether they sacrifice 4 years to get the GI Bill or 20+ years so they can have a pension, it was a sacrifice with a payoff in mind. That's not watering it down.

I did 8 years. Some AD, mostly reserves. I have a nice disability percentage and dont feel bad at all. I pay hundreds of thousands of dollars a year in taxes, so I'm certainly not sitting around and sucking up benefits.
But, yes, there are some young soldiers that only serve four years and do whatever they can to stack as many disabilities as possible. Then they go live overseas and dont work again in their 20sm

I have a number of valid claims, in my opinion, but only one has been substantiated. My military retirement is reduced by the amount of my small VA compensation.
I’m perfectly ok with throwing out the current system and only compensating people who have lost limbs or who suffer from certain PTSDs.
The younger troops are weaponzing the VA compensation are sometimes 100% disabled by the time they get out. This while being perfectly able to function in society. This should also be fixed.

Well the good thing for you is Crapplebees discount isn't driven by disability.

How are they able to "weaponize" the compensation to 100%? What are their injuries such that the VA will rate them at 100% without being injured?

This thread is giving me tremendous anxiety and I'm going to file for VA Disability because of this thread.
