Facebook will be stopping part of its fight against fake news — because the social media giant said it only led to more people believing lies. The company on Wednesday announced that it will stop its short-lived practice of labeling misleading or false stories as "disputed," and will instead provide links to related articles that can give context or truth where needed.

Facebook said its attempt to thwart fake news backfired, since the "disputed" label ended up making believers of fake news more defensive and more likely to insist on their version of the truth.

This tells you everything you need to know about the mainstream media and the tech giants.

Facebook labeling something a lie actually makes people believe it more.

Think of how damning that is for how Facebook is perceived by people.

So they won’t block articles, they’ll just offer other articles to Dispute the stories and instead support their version of facts. Isn’t this classic propaganda?

The truth is that enough people like me reported their "factual" articles as fake news that they didn't like that the results didn't match their narrative.

To me we should be celebrating this. You want the truth to stand up to scrutiny. To be successful we need all ideas challenged.

I use FB as birthday reminders. Not sure I ever see "news" on FB. Wouldn't read it if I did.

IMO This is a step in the right direction for them. Honestly there is a lot of fake/sensationalist “news” floating around out there. The problem is Facebook lumps these in with the legitimate alternative news sights. Hopefully people will be smart enough to see through any BS that comes through their linked related articles.

I saw quite a few warnings on things posted by Conservatives recently.

I don’t really have liberal FB friends that are the type to post political things so I’m curious as to whether FB was even handed on these warnings.

I suspect that I know the answer but I’m not in a position to have direct knowledge.

This policy was always doomed to fail

That being said, it’s a sad commentary of the nature of our discourse (and of human credulity in general) that simply saying something is false makes a large segment of the population MORE likely to believe it.
