I can't believe the turn-around we are seeing.

Massive Nuclear Buildout: The Department of Energy is providing loan guarantees to a coalition of six American utilities to construct up to 10 new Westinghouse nuclear reactors, each capable of producing over a gigawatt of electricity [13:39].

Direct Government Investment: Additionally, the Department of Commerce has agreements for another 10 massive gigawatt units. The government plans to develop these reactors directly and potentially transfer them to private ownership once built.

Workforce Mobilization: To support this scale of construction, the major firm Bechtel has partnered with building trades unions to modernize apprenticeships and recruit a new generation of high-skilled workers specifically trained for nuclear construction [15:30].

Nuclear-Powered Merchant Ships: Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has launched an initiative to deploy Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) on American commercial shipping vessels, aiming to rebuild American maritime power for the 21st century [16:39].

It is about time we overcame our fears.

This just happened in March in Indiana.

I have to wonder how much the increasing energy drain of AI is also pushing this.

We came within a 'fairy fart' of losing the chance to come back.

When Vogtle Units 3 and 4 (using the AP1000 reactor design) were greenlit, the United States hadn't built a new commercial nuclear reactor from scratch in roughly 30 years. Because of that three-decade gap, the specialized manufacturing supply chain, the institutional knowledge, and the highly skilled workforce required for nuclear construction had severely atrophied. The industry essentially had to relearn how to build these massive plants from the ground up.

Westinghouse took the brunt of that steep learning curve. As the lead contractor for both the Vogtle project in Georgia and the V.C. Summer project in South Carolina, they were overwhelmed by staggering cost overruns, continuous construction delays, and manufacturing bottlenecks. It pushed them far past "obsolescence"—the financial bleeding actually forced Westinghouse into Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2017.

That bankruptcy was the pivotal moment where Southern Company had to make a hard choice. While the V.C. Summer project in South Carolina was abandoned, Southern Company (through Southern Nuclear) stepped up, took over project management directly from Westinghouse, and ultimately dragged Units 3 and 4 across the finish line.

Southern Company essentially absorbed the cost of re-establishing the American nuclear supply chain. The lost expertise was painstakingly rebuilt on the ground in Georgia, which is exactly why those newly acquired skills and established supply lines are now being viewed as the necessary foundation for the massive nuclear resurgence mentioned in Mike's video.

The next (D) administration will just "review" the permitting for six or seven years, the projects will die.

I would wager that it is the only thing driving it.

Regulators and utilities might give some other claims in public, but we all know that the vast majority of this new wave of electricity production will be dedicated towards powering data centers.

“ I have to wonder how much the increasing energy drain of AI is also pushing ”. (Quote B)

Big time. AI is the future. Get on board or get left. Cheap energy is the ‘mother’s milk’ of productivity. Productivity and Consumption, if one believes that societal ethos is effective towards “the pursuit of happiness “.

Live and learn.

I was up in South Carolina at one of the massive lakes Duke energy built out to cool the nuclear reactor

Incredibly impressive

The recognition that Silicon Valley-based mega corporations need energy-sucking data centers sure killed off their focus and support of the global broiling industry.

The futuristic civilization that is being built will make the relatively agrarian rural society that I grew up in look like an Orwellian fantasy. There is just no limit on how such may affect the common person. For good or bad.

I told my Great Granddaughter that she would ride a ‘space car’ out to very far off planets that did not have any bird, or butterflies or flowers or dogs and people and that she would ‘plant’ some there just like we planted and watered our garden. She believed me and it made both of us happier. I stand by that prediction. But I think it will be very hard to get there and keep the handle on it. Human nature being such that it is.

If my dad were still alive this would have been the best news for him. he worked in nuclear power for about 35 years until cancer took his life 4 and a half years ago. He was struggling to get consistent work in the last couple of years before his diagnosis, with all the plants closing. He would have loved this.

Always interesting what gives ‘a want’ for projects. Follow the money. Leftist have the will to “be green” until their bottom line is affected.
