39 million Americans can’t afford a summer vacation

The summer season is a huge travel time for American families, but some startling information tells us that this year isn’t going to be the break a lot of people are hoping for.

According to a new Bankrate survey, an estimated 39 million Americans won’t be taking a summer vacation this year because they can’t afford one. While just over half of American adults are planning to take some sort of trip during the summer months, a whopping 48% are either definitely not taking one or haven’t decided yet.

The biggest factor, of course, is cost.

Really?

The fact that 85% of Americans apparently can afford a getaway vacation, instead of just visiting family during time off, all while supposedly live month-to-month with <$400 set aside for an emergency, is startling to me.

So, ~12% of the USA can not afford a summer vacation?

88% can?

That is an amazingly positive number. Wow.

That is actually less than the number of Americans in poverty.

Same.... if only 39 million in a country with a population nearing 350million can’t afford a summer getaway.....that sounds to me like a very low number of people who can’t afford it.

How many can’t afford it because they didn’t plan or save for it?

I'm waiting on the media to bring back the Misery Index.

I mentioned several times during the Obama years that it magically disappeared.

They can't use it for Trump, however, they can change the parameters around it to fit their narrative.

I bet that's what they end up doing. It is the Proggy way.

When we set US poverty-level at an income number higher than median-level income in several European countries, it leaves one to question the stat, or place the word "poverty" in quotes

How many can’t afford it because their entire life is essentially a vacation, with no one in a family having a job in generations and living off of government subsidy for everything?

Perhaps work camps in scenic, historical and or rural areas could be sort of a vacation for these under privileged people that never get the opportunity to get out of the city.

Somebody made a thread a day or 2 ago that made a point similar to this.

The problem in the USA isn’t lack of prosperity, it’s that the last couple of generations have known NOTHING BUT PROSPERITY and thus have lost all perspective.

This is where SFP's "Poverty Chart" comes in handy.

I wish I had saved that thing.

For those who don't know: it is a chart showing how many "poor" Americans own things like a TV, fridge, microwave, etc, compared to poor people all over the globe.

That is a rather remarkably low number.

That's an impressive economy for sure. Well done Trump

yea, I'm not poor, but I've gone entire years without vacations, many times. Vacations are about as frivolous of expenditures of money that there are. It's the first thing that gets cut when I need to balance the budget. It's like saying poor people can't afford to eat lobster and steak.

Seems to me those numbers are pretty close to the number of illegals that are here.

Go back to pre-WW2 and what % of Americans do you think took summer vacations?
