Why is TV coverage of golf Majors not comprehensive?

I would think for instance, some channel (ESPN, network channel, etc) would willingly broadcast the Masters before 2PM on Thursday and Friday. What is the reasoning behind the spotty coverage, especially in the early rounds?

:sigh: You don't think ESPN wants to go wall-to-wall?

I'm with you, I think it's crazy but for some reason it doesn't bother big golf fans.

The Masters Committee does whatever the frick it wants.

ESPN would gladly play wall to wall coverage if allowed.

Augusta wants it to start at 2. They get they want.

Everything that's been said previously is spot on.

And I'm old enough to remember when all you got was 2 hours on Sat & Sun in B&W

The other 3 majors are covered way differently than the Masters

ESPN would pay a fortune to be covering it all live right now.

It is kind of annoying to hear all kinds of people acting proud that Augusta National only lets them show a few hours. It sucks for the 99.9% of us that aren't there.

Masters wants as few hours of TV as possible. They want you to want more so you think about coming to Augusta and paying the money to watch in person.

But you can't even watch in person if you wanted to. They have a huge waiting list to get a card.

Meh, keep in mind that ESPN gets paid for the number of viewers, in terms of thousands. look @ the demographic of golf fans. You need ~142k viewers for an entire hour to generate $100k in advertising revenue.

So while some folks will take the afternoon off to see the Masters, or take a late lunch, the majority of viewers that watch the masters are working during that time slot, or to get enough viewers en masse to cover the costs of broadcasting it vs. doing whatever the frick ESPN has on it.

They used to only show the back 9.

The front 9 being on TV is fairly new.

It's not even about money

It's about exclusivity

A lot has changed under Billy Payne though. I never thought I'd see Augusta in a video game

I realize that...I'm glad I wasn't old enough to care when that was the case. I really don't think I could get overly excited for a tournament that would only show the last 2 hours of the leaders

The same reason that The Masters is not a sanctioned PGA event, nor does it go by PGA rules and guidelines.

They control everything about the tournament. Coverage, rules, E V E R Y T H I N G.

Money allows them to do that.

It sucks. I hate that Tiger's 65 today won't be televised.

To be honest ANGC doesn't give a shite about that either.

Or even visible to worldly beings at all. Only the truly enlightened will be able to tell that 73 was actually a 65
