Is Steve Miller/ Doobie Bros an acceptable 1st concert for a 12 yr old shredder?

He LOVES Steve Miller.
I want his first concert to be solid.
I say the Space Cowboy is solid for a kid who wants to be a musician and appreciates the Old School ways.
What sayeth The Music Board Douchearati ?

Them's solid 70s bands. Maybe he'll pick up some good rhythm guitar from the Doobs.

I think the Doobie Brothers was my first concert when I was around that age. It was fine.

Who today does it better than the last two minutes of this song (3:20 mark) ?

My step brothers had me listening to Steve Miller at a very early age, like 8. Still love them.

What I see on their youtube vids is they always have heavy hitters playing with them. They got a version on Serenade ( my favorite SMB track) with Satriani soloing and George Thorogood on the freaking maracas.

No doubt he needs to see those legends. Great concert I am sure. Does he know what weed smells like? Just curious.

If anyone recalls that Chuck Berry's last hit song was "My Ding-a-ling" - in the early 1970s. His backing band during that time was the group that would become The Steve Miller Band.

I still haven't forgiven him for Abracadabra, though.

I don't care for Steve Miller, but I love me some Doobie Brothers.

Seen the Doobs once, and they were very good.

It was outdoor though, and I would have preferred to have seen a band like them in a concert hall/theater type setting with great acoustics.

They'd be a great band for a kid's first show.

Yeah, but you aren't of that time, and you don't really care for melody like we do. You are IMHO all about attitude, and modern "authenticity" which is cool, but it limits your appreciation of other genres and legendary AOR fare. Miller's melodic guitar kills me, even if he was responsible for the atrocity we call Abracadabra.

And of course the Doobies were really two bands, the pre and post Michael McDonald Minute by Minute era band. I know its hard to believe but at one time they were one of the three most popular bands in the world, and their musicianship was stellar.

It's not the concert I'd prefer, but with the limited amount available and the fact that my son kills it on the guitar at 12 and loves Miller's style, I think it's a solid memory for him.

I like the Doobies. And I do like a lot of AOR fare (or can at least tolerate it), but Steve Miller is like nails on a chalkboard to me. I don't know what it is, but I just can't stand him at all. It's just so safe and whitebread. It's about as un-rock n roll as a Pat Boone show, which at least would have kitsch value.

I don't really feel Abracadabra is all that out of line for his career. But is a decent show for a 12 year old. It'll be a solid, professional gig.

I'd much rather see a dad bring his son to concerts like that, then seeing some flat bill hat wearin' dad bringing his kid to-god knows what,

but then, I'm gettin' old
