Finished The Wire last night (spoilers)

I've been watching it gradually over the last few months, but really hit it hard the last week or two (watched seasons 4 and 5 in that time span). Finished the finale last night.
Fantastic show. I had always heard pretty much nothing but good things about it, and people always tout it as "OMG best show evar!!" and all that, so I was a bit apprehensive going in because I didn't want to expect too much. And all in all, it's just great. Definitely lived up to most expectations I had and I had heard from others.
Funny thing is, it's hard to explain why it's so good; it just kinda is. I mean, the tons of different plot lines are almost all interesting, the characters are fantastic, the acting is great, etc. But those are pretty general things...it's hard to say specifically why the show is so good. I had read an overall synopsis of the series and saw that each season focused on a different aspect of the city (drug trade, seaport, government bureaucracy, school system, and print media) and was worried that some seasons would struggle compared to others...but that really didn't happen. Aside from maybe a few of the plots, I pretty much liked it all.
Best seasons (or should I say my favorite) are 1 and 4...I really liked the whole dynamic of the Barksdale organization, and season 4 with the kids was really interesting to me.
Also, aside from one fairly huge spoiler I read on here (in a Walking Dead thread, no less...about Stringer getting killed), I was able to stay away from them, which made it all the better. And to be honest, even knowing the couple of spoilers that I did know didn't really ruin anything, because you're never really surprised when people die or something bad happens, because that's how shite goes in that kind of setting.
Favorite character overall is prolly Cutty for me. Other favorites are Bubbles, Omar, Stringer, Slim Charles, Bodie, Chris Partlow, and Marlo. Least favorite is Snoop (by a fricking TON...she fricking sucked bad), Cheese, Greggs, Daniels's wife, Clay Davis (sheeeeeeeeeeeeet....), Namond Brice, and prolly a few more I can't think of.
As far as the best show ever, I'm not so sure...but it's definitely up there, no doubt. And I feel like the more I reflect on it and think about it, the more I'll like it. Anyway, thanks to the M/TV Board over the years for talking this show up to the point where I felt like I finally had to check it out, cuz I'm really glad I did. It's awesome. And feel free to bring up anything about the show in discussion...spoil away, if you will. I haven't really talked to anyone about it since I've been watching it, so I've been wanting to talk about it and I'm open to any discussion about the show.

Welcome to the cult.
I actually think knowing Stringers fate makes his arc even more Shakespearean. He's such a tragic, doomed figure.
With you on Bubbles, the greatest character in TV history. Love his final scene. If anyone deserved a marginally happy ending, it was Bubbs.

Stringer and Avon's scene on the roof top might be the best in TV history.

I always just thought to myself it's the realness and rawness to the characters. The show the good deeds of the bad guys and the bad deeds of the good guys. It shows that all these people are human and pretty much capable of doing the same things, no matter what side of the law they are on. And one of the biggest scumbags of all 5 seasons wasn't a drug dealer, cop or stick up kid, it was that mother fricking reporter Scott Templeton who fabricated everything
SPOILERS...
and it seems that most people on this board agree that season 5 was one of their least favorite seasons, but I really appreciate how they wrapped up Bubs' story and then showed how a Michael evolves into an Omar and how Dukie evolves into a Bubz. You know both guys (Omar and Bubz) had to be similar as youngsters, both very intelligent and talented in a lot of ways, but didn't have any other option but to take the road that they eventually took.

Snoop was completely unlikeable but I thought she was a really great character. Ruthless and incoherent is a pretty scary combo.

True to an extent, but I'd definitely rather not have known that. But like I said, when you're in the business of drugs and murder, nothing is really surprising or shocking, especially people getting killed. And I like how the creators weren't scared to kill anybody...that makes a show all the more great when you know that at any given time, big time, major characters could go.

Agreed. I was genuinely happy for him at the end when it showed him sitting at the table with his sister and (I assume) her kid.
Another thing I liked about Bubbs was that he got clean in like season 3, and you were pulling for him, and then in the end he ended up failing and the drugs pulled him back in.
It's great when a show takes a more realistic approach and it's not all rainbows and sunshine when all is said and done. Dukie was a fantastic character in that regard...kid had all the smarts in the world, and finally looked like he was gonna drag himself out of his situation, and then he got sucked back into the game, so to speak...and in the end, ends up stealing from Prezbo and living a life strung out on heroin. Sad story for him.
Kinda the same with Michael...always seemed like a good kid deep down, but ended up just getting caught up in the streets and ends up basically Omar-ing himself. His scene when he shoots Snoop was almost touching in a weird way.

Oh I was going nuts, no doubt.
I almost texted you several times throughout watching this and being like "Holy shite...just finished season __...wow."
Also, the montage scenes at the ends of each season are all really awesome.

The way they wrapped up everyone's story in season 5 was great. The fake serial killer and boring arse writers trying to win awards were not.

True. And that was awesome. I liked McNulty's journey through the show. Similar to Bubbles actually, where he sobers up a bit and gets clean and settles in with Beadie, and then ends up going back to his old bullshite ways in the end. That's how real life works. shite, even Marlo in the end has to return to the streets to feel like himself.

My main gripe with season 5 was the whole newspaper plots...that was just boring to me. But I liked how they connected everything together and made it relevant...media is a huge tool and can be used for good or evil so to speak. And as much as I didn't really care for the whole "homeless serial killer" plot line, I like how they closed that, and it ties in with the whole "good doing bad" thing you alluded to...a couple of rogue cops go out of their way to fabricate and bullshite a fricking national news serial killer so they can keep their case going. And in the end, the powers that be put so much energy and effort into it that when they find out it's all bullshite, they don't even care since it worked out for everyone's benefit.
I really liked the whole political aspect of the show...really goes to show you just how much bullshite politics can influence.

Agree, great character (though, I don't think she did much "acting" - it's who she was). Her introductory scene in the hardware store was awesome.

One thing that turned me off to the show early on was that it seemed like they were all trying too hard to be "street-real", but once I got over that hump I was in. Hooked. The scene that did that was the chess game scene.
I really like the whole Hamsterdam sub-plot.

did you notice Cutty gave one of the zombies a right hook as they were running into the safe part of the prison?

Yeah, this show did an excellent job of making the Barksdale gang look so evil in season 1, only to find out not long after that "Holy shite, these politicians are the real dick bags!"
I think everyone just loves this show because it's like you said, they uncovered every layer from the ground up. I remember being so disappointed when season 2 started thinking "man, I don't want to watch these dock working white boys."....but then season 2 turned out to be one of my favorite seasons ever. You start seeing the bigger picture and the reason why the game is what it is.
Loved the part when Cutty was trying to tell Dukie there are other ways out of this place than being a dealer or a consumer, but he honestly didn't know what it was
and my biggest beef with Templeton was that out of all these characters, he had the best opportunity to be an honest, unbiased individual and he turns out to be the most dishonest dickhead ever. Imagine a guy with his personality coming up in the projects of West B-more?
Oh and hell yes I hated Namond Brice. Out of those kids in season 4 that needed a chance, he was the least of them in my mind. But that's life.

hands down hardest scene to watch was Carver watching Randy go to the foster home permanently knowing he couldn't do a thing about it.

Oh hell yeah, that was tough. And since you mentioned it, Carver had one of the more positive arcs. I loved watching him evolve into such a stand up guy. Him and Bubbs both.

Exactly right. So frustrating when a group of people are talking about their favorite TV series' and when I bring up The Wire people always ask why and what it's about. I just start stammering and can't really explain why it's so great, then you start to say its a show about cops and the drug trade and you feel like an idiot because that doesn't even scratch the surface.
My top 5 characters are: Bodie, Stringer, Bubbles, Prop Joe, and Bunk but could easily go another 10

Yeah that was a good scene. I hate how Randy ended up. But he did what he had to do...adjusted in a rough environment and became what everyone expected him to become from the get go anyway. That was sad.
Also really liked Prezbo's whole story. From being a dick in the beginning to then realizing that he's not really a bad dude, and then him kinda just getting a bad rap in the end with his series of unfortunate events. Him being a teacher was weird for me at first, but I ended up liking that story line a lot. shite got real when that chick razored that other chick's face...I was like "Holy shite!" when that shite happened.

Speaking of that, I really liked Wallace. Great story about how a genuinely good kid can get wrapped up in bad shite and end up getting killed for basically no fault of his own.
And I just remembered, I also REALLY hated the douche cop with the shaved head/bowl cut hair. Forget his name though..
