Glad you finally came around.

Agree with almost everything in your post. Favorite seasons, favorite characters and all that. Walking Dead has become even better to me now that Cutty has joined the cast.

This show only got better to me after I let it digest for awhile and then got around to watching it a second time.

ETA - As far as what makes the show so good, here is a video I posted a while back that I think helps.

What makes the Sun storyline so bad is that it lacked nuance. Even in the City Hall arc, it's not that the Mayor is a bad guy. In fact, he's a decent guy who wants to do good, he just can't eat that one more bowl of shite. Ultimately, its the system who brings down everyone, as we all look at short term metrics instead of longterm good. We juke the stats.

But the newspaper was just David Simon settling old scores with people he hated. His editor is perhaps the only truly evil character on the show, without redeeming qualities. And his shot at Scotty Templeton is clearly going after bigname journalists like Bob Woodward. They were his only cartoons.

I do love the long arcs. Bodie went from a person I hated to one I loved. Same with Prezbo and Carver. The story of the children is just too heartbreaking to talk about, really. Another way the system destroys us.

I watched the first season fairly slowly...episode here or there. Then I got really into season 2 and watched it in a couple weeks. Then stopped for a while. Then watched 3 and the same thing...stopped for a few weeks (maybe even longer). But I started season 4 a couple weeks ago and really got into it and have been basically marathoning it since then.

Also, as much as I didn't like De'Angelo, the "Where's Wallace...where Wallace at?" scene with him and Stringer is one of my favorites of the series.

Yeah. Since it ended in 2008 I've probably watched it from 1-5 at least 3 times (but certain episodes of particular seasons way more). I'm now watching season 5 again on demand and this will complete my 4th time watching all 5 seasons. I'm sure in about 2 years or less I'll end up doing it again. HBO Go is a bitch!

sometimes when people ask me my favorite season, it will just be the season I happen to be watching.

I've watched the whole series three times with certain seasons once or twice more. Usually find myself re watching it after I finish another TV series I really enjoyed (Breaking Bad, Dexter) and am always surprised how well it holds up and how much more subtleties I catch. Love the fact that not every episode ties something together or has some sort of viewer "payoff". The story and arcs are told the way things happen in real life, and more times then not people and events don't turn out ideal or satisfying.

Just a guess, but I think it's poking fun at how Cutty was always trying to find Spyder. Even if he was police chief he would have a city wide manhunt to know if anyone knew where Spyder was

that makes sense
Spyder must have been a beast of a boxer for Cutty to look for him so much. I started to feel bad for the other kids at times. Oh you're here Namond? Well where's Spyder?

Glad you liked the show. It's been a year or so since i watched it, and it was the best show series I have watched. I wish I could remember alot of the names with faces you mentioned besides the main characters. My favorite season was the school/kids season. I really enjoyed that.
I think that omar deserved to die better than he did though.

it's hard to explain why it's so good;

The reason it's so good is because it is real. It is basically a fictionalized documentary. It is even shot like a documentary. It's the real-est fiction thats ever been on TV. It was created by people who actually had first hand knowledge of the settings and situations. Teachers, reporters, cops, dealers all were involved.

And for me this is what makes it so affecting. You can not watch it (knowing its stunning accuracy) and ever look at this country the same way again. It is a treatise on the American city - a place where most Americans live - and the portrait is shocking even to those of us who think we know what is really going on.

America is just not the place many of us like to think it is.

Davis, Carcetti, D'Angelo, Wallace, Bodie, Bunk etc. are US. The show is holding up a mirror to this society.

frick an Emmy, The Wire should win the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Maybe so, but to be fair, he should've bit it when he jumped off a 5th story balcony.

Also, the fact that Kenard was only like 10 or 11 and he killed Omar just goes to show you that when you live that kinda lifestyle, it could happen anywhere, anytime, and by anybody...you're basically safe from no one, not even the little kids that you think are so terrified of you.

I think it's weird that I hate Snoop so much, but fricking loved me some Chris Partlow...they both basically serve the same purpose (though Partlow was also closer to Marlo and was more of a confidant than Snoop). I just liked how cold-blooded Partlow was and how he kept himself through it all. He was a smart dude who was just built for the enforcer-type role.

Actually, the "real" Omar did this in real life. Surviving a jump off a fifth floor balcony to avoid a shootout actually happened. That is so awesome.
