Pirogue or Kayak? Edit: Making own Pirogue, Pics on page 3

In the market for something to duck hunt in the marshland of big branch. Can anyone give me some advice?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
Searching craigslist now for something used. Budget $300. Thanks.

I'd go with the pirogue, though I am not an expert. Do many people hunt from a Kayak? Seems that would end up being on some viral video.

We dont shoot from the boats. We get out and hide in the grass. I've been borrowing a kayak and have never used a pirogue before.
I'm thinking a pirogue I could put my 5 year old in with me.

Anyone ever built one? I just read some plans and it seems pretty easy. Just not sure how much all the stuff costs. Epoxy, glues, paint, etc...Anyone?

There was a thread a week ago with websites that had plans to build a wooden one. If I get time at work I'll see if I can find it.

It is very doable with pretty simple tools. I built a very small one last year. I was looking to spend less than 75-100$ total, and ended up putting about 175 into it. Most of that was spent on epoxy and fiberglass tape. It still floats today, but my only regret is not making it wider. I had to make "outriggers" for it afterwards to add stability. I only use it now to retrieve wood ducks from a deep slough.
PS: It will weigh MUCH more than a kayak.

Me and my buddy and some other guys hunt big branch around 20 times a year since we live in Mandeville, at least during LSU winter break.
He uses a pirogue, I use a yak. For hunting purposes I would use a pirogue since you can put dekes in it comfortably and possibly shove another person in one.
They both cut through the water about the same.
But the key is during teal season, he can't stop off and kill the trout at the mouth of bayou lacombe like I can. Its a nice little additive for me. But I can only carry about a little more than a dozen dekes. I also have a compartment up front for storing my gun and shells, because its waterproof, he doesn't have that.
But after my long essay of recommendations, its really just about what you use it for.

For those that are looking to build a pirogue, the cost for a 2 man is around $150 with out paint.

I used a pirogue all my life and only used a kayak a few times.
The huge advantage of a pirogue is being able transport relatively heavy weight and not draw much water. For example when hunting or crawfishing you may have decoys/nets and gear and game with you and need to go across water that is only inches deep.
In a pirogue that is properly designed you should be able to do this. In a kayak that is the same length you will not be able to carry as much with you.
A kayak is designed for ease of use and maneuverability, and it is much faster on the water. They are also lighter so if you need to drag a decent distance through the woods/marsh that is an advantage. They are also tougher and you won't have to paint them each year if you do drag your boat around.
In my opinion if you can fit everything you need into a kayak it is better. If you need to carry a decent amount with you i would look at a pirogue.

Putting a 5 year old in a Pirouge...
Easily done but don't get less than a 16' pirouge. I would be nervous with a 5 year old in a 14'. I have done it several times but kept us in 2' of water or less while doing it.

It will depend on the child but I remember riding in the pirogue with my dad, uncles, grand father from the age of 2 until i could go by myself. However you will need to keep a life jacket on them at all times since there is always a risk of falling in.
I do agree that the bigger the better if you are going to have a child in the boat.
Also if you are going hunting in the winter (especially with a young one) i would keep a dry storage bag with some spare clothing in...just in case.

i don't think you'll be able to find a kayak for what you're looking for for anywhere near that price if not at least double. pirogue.

I dont know how big your pirouge is but my kayak 13ft holds 550 pounds

Thanks for all of the responses. I decided to build my own pirogue. Bought all the supplies except paint totaling $128. This is absolutely fun as hell. I've always enjoyed wood working and needed a new project.

I want to build one. We have a fiberglass one but the bottoms really narrow. It was nice when I was a kid but I catch hell getting in and out now. Want something a little wider. And just to say I built a pirogue.
