My dad still does it too. He is 74. We have always worn out safety harness and stayed attached to the tree going up and down. If I forget my harness I hunt on the ground or go back and get it.

I mainly saddle hunt now. Never felt safer climbing and while hunting.

On a side note if you lose a loved one to a seizure take solace in the fact they didn't suffer. It didn't hurt, came out of the blue, and though I happened to survive, I don't remember shite before waking up out of a coma in the hospital.

In fact, I told my SO if it ever happens again wait before calling the ambulance. Surprising/not surprising she did not protest....like hardly at all!

Ok I have derailed enough.

Ive climbed some. I worked for Phone Company for 28 yrs. But about 20 or 25 ft is the highest I can go. I just never feel comfortable. When I started in 1990 we climbed artwork alot. But once we got bucket trucks no more ever. To much risk for Company. Same for hunting.risk vs reward. Platform or condo for me. It's always sad when this happens. It can happen to any of us even climbing into a 15 ft stand.

frick climbing stands. I just find spots I like and put up a lock on or ladder tree stand. I really don’t even like lock ons I don’t trust the straps. I’ll usually add an extra ratchet strap or a metal cable for extra security

I always put a ratchet strap at the base of a hanging stand. It definitely feels better when step off in it and it doesn’t roll sideways.
I got away from climbers years ago. I had a few close calls and stick to boxes and ladders for gun hunting. I’ll hunt out of a millennium when bow hunting.

Way back when during my first year of deer hunting I happened up on some pine trees with limbs almost all the way to the ground. Odd looking trees, but perfect for climbing. They also happened to be in the area of active scraps. I climb up probably about 15 feet and sit down on the large limb. It was comfortable (at first, now I know that wouldn't have lasted long). Sit down...in about 30 seconds the entire limb crashes down without any warning, no crack or nothing. I'm suddenly laying very flat on my back with my 30/30 still in my right hand. Swore I'd never trust climbing a tree again. Luckily it was soft ground with very deep pine straw.

I’m 53, in my teens and 20s use to climb so high it was damn scary at times. Fell asleep In my shop made stand when I was about 19. Stand top went sideways and I woke up from a dream that I was falling. Few years back, the bottom fell out from climber and I had to bear hug tree and slide down. Got scars on both arms now.
Things can go wrong in a hurry.
Nowadays I use climbing sticks and ropes for the gun, and go to 20 foot that’s it.

API Grand Slam and Summit Goliath here.
67 years old.
I trust both of these Climbers 100 per cent.
I only climb Pine trees , Oaks are a Death sentence.
Harness from the ground. Never fell , Never came close.

I find a small to medium oak with soft bark and healthy moss to be the best climbing trees. Why do you think they’re a death sentence?

ETA: about the thickness of a light pole is what I mean by small to medium.

We have mostly Water Oaks and the Climber teeth won,t sink in and grab.
Pines have that nice soft bark and you can hear the teeth crunch in when you climb.

I have a safety harness but I no longer get very high in my climber. At the most 20ft, hunt public land, occasionally I'll hunt on the ground. I use to get close to 30ft but honestly, in thick woods, felt like I couldn't see anything. I'll admit, didn't start using a harness until my late 20s, in my mid 40s now. I actually use my safety harness to drag deer out of the woods. Tie rope around neck, have harness on, easy walk.
