All serious, if you have the funds you could burn all the grass in the yard and lay a new layer of sod (whatever will grow in that area well) down. I would do that to my lawn if the wife wasn't still in school. Probaby run about 3-4 grand but would look like a brand new yard.

Get a soil test too. We gotta add a shite load to ours. All soils are diff. Your local co op will help u w this. Keep it cut and it'll spread. May need to aerate if soil is very compact. Frequent mowing will help keep weeds at bay.

For now, I'd:
-just apply a Weed-n-Feed before a forecasted rain (though not a gully -washer).
-Apply 25% less Weed-n-Feed than the directions say.
-Mow it EVERY week with the deck of your mower set as high as it will go.

Mowing at least every week will prevent most weeds from maturing enough to reproduce. Also, this approach will allow the St. Augustine to get thick enough to choke out many weeds.

The big important step is in the winter:
-Cut the grass down low (rake up cuttings)
-Spread a granular pre-emergent herbicide in February
-Fertilize with a slow-release granular in April
-Mow with the deck at high position again.

Go to a local independently-owned Feed & Farm supply for this stuff in bulk. It can save you a TON of money over box stores.

*Note: Careful not to overdo any pre-emergent containing atrazine. Atrazine works it's way in ground water if over-applied. Use only once per year.

Solid advice. Do you recommend any particular preemergent?

Others have given great suggestions and St Augustine is a great grass. It is sensitive to lots of herbicides that other lawn grasses are not. That being said make sure to read all directions and warnings prior to applying. Also, it appears that your front yard has a decent slope to it. From what I see in the second pic some of your bare spots may be due to uneven watering by your sprinkler system. Make sure that you have even coverage and that none of the sprinklers are creating erosion issues on the sloped portion of your yard.

given enough fertilizer and water st Augustine will choke out all of the weed issues. good luck.

I would not recommend a herbicide at this point. The pic of the St. Augustine looks healthy. If you use a pre-emergent this late in the spring it will have little effect. Post-emergent may work well but that means your yard will look very brown for a long time.

My advice would be to level out the low spots in the yard with river sand or topsoil then de-thatch the entire yard well. Fertilize with 13-13-13 with a quality spreader set correctly. Now, as the grass grows thicker and taller, raise your mower blade. Get maximum shade from the grass itself. This helps with moisture retention and also hides all low lying weeds such as dollar weeds ect..

After the yard is growing well, you can spot treat the taller growing or obvious areas of weeds that bother you (large clumps of clover for example). Healthy grass will take over and choke out all weeds.

Areas that are really bare or ugly, replace with sod.

I use Scott's Bonus S for St. Augustine grass and it works very well. My lawn is also full of dollar weed and othe undesirables right now. I spread the Bonus S last week and the weeds are already showing signs of weed killer. Typically a few weeks after I put it down, the St. Aug gets bright green.

Just pay someone to come spray it. It's worth it IMO.

That is a type of centipede commonly found in central Alabama but not St. Aug. it has smaller leaves, so to speak. It thickens up and will choke out the weeds. Add sand tot he gaps and also weed and feed. Patience my friend. I am reclaiming my yard from weeds and have Bermuda/weed mix with thin spots galore. Good luck! BTW, I live in central Alabama and this growing season this year is phenomenal.

Lime the shite out of your yard a soil test will tell you that more than likely. If your ph is below 5 which it probably is just looking at it I would go 100 lbs per 1000 feet. Most yards with a lot of trees need plenty of ammenments the trees are using up what the grass needs. Not to mention st aug is a hard grass to take care of if you resod go with empire zoysia. Curious is that Baldwin county

Not really. I use atrazine because that's what I'm familiar with, but in many soils it seems to increase the risk of fungus in the summer.

You're in a different area from me with different soils. it's best you defer to someone with local knowledge.
