My front yard is atrocious. I just bought the house and there are dead spots all over the yard with tons of various weeds.
What kind of grass do I have?
What should be my course of action for making it awesome?

Looks like st Augustine. But plenty weeds. Just keep watered, mowed, and fertilize. It will grow.

I'd start with Ortho or Scott's weed killer. Something with 24-D. Your yard will look like shite for a couple weeks while the weeds die. After 10-15 days, fertilize it.
After a few cuts and warm weather it should start to look much better.

What he said. You have to make it look worse for it to get better

That's St. Augustine. I'd get the rest of the stump out of there. Then lay down some top soil. Flatten it out then sod. You could do this for most of it or just the areas that bother you the most. I wouldn't worry about the weeds just yet. If you get the lawn established they'll get choked out after a couple years.

Have you considered doing a ph test of the yard? Cheap to do. Leveling the yard (top dressing with sand to aid drainage and root growth) will help. Also consider somethings before choosing a new turf.
1. How much sun.
2. Soil type (clay, sandy ect)
3. Future plans such as trees you want to plant
Just some ideas.
Most important aspect is your budget and the amount of maintenance you want to do. Personally I enjoy yard work because it is relaxing.
