So looking at getting a bike and apparently honda is the only one that still offers a manual transmission which is stupid as shite if you ask me. However a rancher is damn near the same price as a 700 Kodiak but the Kodiak has a automatic which I am not keen on especially bc it will be used for duck hunting and see a lot of water and mud. Anyone have any experience with yamahas and how the transmissions hold up.

I have an 04 Kodiak. Have never done any maintenance to it the transmission, and never had any problems
I'd never buy hondas automatic transmission. I don't like it.

I have the Honda Rancher manual. The fact they are the last major manufacturer of manuals is the reason I bought it.

Manual shift manual FTMFW

When I get on an electric shift one, I'm always trying to shift with my foot

I have an 09' Grizzly with the auto. Only issue is if I go through deep water, for 30 seconds or so after if you gas it quick it may slip a little. Other than that, I like it a lot. I was hesitant to get an automatic after driving manuals my whole life, but of course the city girl wife wanted an automatic and the Yamaha was recommended by several people in the know over the Honda.

Last deer season our lease was flooded pretty bad...drove my 07' grizzly through 2-3 ft of water daily getting to one of my stands...never an issue...YMMV

Also how does it compare to Hondas auto transmissions? I can get a used 09 Honda Rubicon with lows hours that is auto or electronic shift. However it has been sitting up for a year and the damn rear brakes are locked up on it. Also we had to clean out the carburetor and it's not idling correctly and kils if you take the choke off. I am hoping we do not mess up the throttle or choke cables when we were taking apart the carburetor to clean it.

A few things.

Yamaha's belt drive is a constant tension system so you will never have to replace your belt.

The belt intake and exhaust are at a similar height to the air intake for the motor. If you get water in your belt intake, the belt can slip. But it also means you ingested water in your motor..so you already messed up.

Lastly, the 420 is the best fourwheeler honda has ever made, but as is typical of honda, they have just fallen behind.

The Kodiak is the far superior bike. It's engine is bulletproof. Its fuel injection system is made in Japan rather than Thailand (honda); its electronics are still made in Japan and not a combination of china, mexico, and Thailand.

Not to mention, honda gives customers a year of factory warranty and then covers nothing. Yamaha gives customers 6 months, but covered a new fuel injection system on my 07 grizzly when it was 4 years out of warranty. It was clearly my fault as well.

I have a 300 honda in the shed, big red, a 125m, and an older rancher. I only have the one grizzly. I will NEVER purchase another honda ATV product. The quality just isn't there anymore.

Don't believe, look outside a service department of a Yamaha and honda dealership. Yamaha outsells honda in louisiana, yet honda has 90% of the bikes being worked on.

Your just not ever gonna beat a Honda transmission. Auto or Manual you can never go wrong. They stand behind their products and engineering like no other manufacturer. Yamaha auto will have issues in water with that belt system guaranteed and you will not get the warranty the vey minute it is pulled and the mechanic see's that it was submerged and in their eyes abused.

That's bullshite.

Honda pioneer 1000s are wiping out AUTOMATIC clutches left and right, which is clearly a defect in the design, and honda isn't doing a damned thing.

Yamaha yxz1000rs are needing MANUAL clutches and yamaha is stepping up. And it is clearly DRIVER error because idiots don't know how to drive a manual.

Honda does not stand behind their product.

They haven't done so in years.

I drove my 700 in a creek 90% of the time in water from 6" to over 3'. I never had a problem with the belt or any other problems due to water. I had a starter clutch go out and it are spark plugs when i first bought it.

Buy a Yamaha but I hate the people at friendly. I've found them to be anything but.
