Thoughts .. yam 300 outboard will run normally off the trailer until idle off the step. Will idle normally for a few minutes but will not give more than 1600 rpm after... stop engine for a few minutes.. will run normally until idle again then repeat 1600 rpm. Ran back to the dock for about 30 min with engine slowly losing rpm ... down to 1000.
Both fuel pumps checked out. All filters were changed and fuel is clean. Still same result.

sounds kinda like the power pack.

my yammy 150 did exactly same thing but I had some water in my fuel from using ethanol gas (this was many many years ago btw)...had to purge my tank and filter a couple times.

Mine did something similar took three mechanics to figure out it was the Thermostat has a crack in it “running cool” when it runs hot an alarm will go off but not if it runs cool.

Agree with Bama poster. I had this issue with my Yamaha; it was the power pack.

First thing I'd do is replace that impeller / waterpump.
Go from there.

Same thing. 2006 two stroke. Did it for three years or so and o changed the impeller at least 3 times. Finally brought it to a true experienced person and he change thermostat.

mechanic had me pull the check valve from inside the fuel pump (since I didn't feel like waiting for him) .. the check was bad so I changed it ... didn't solve the problem but now I can hear the fuel pump sucking air through one of the lines that has a very small crack that evidently opens only when in gear. I can hear it but haven't isolated it yet. Work in progress.

Just replace the entire line if you can. Shouldn’t be a terrible job.
