Let that kid shoot at whatever walks out.

Ok i completely understand and respect that. But let me play devils advocate here. Are you saying that you would not be hesitant to let your kid who has never killed a deer, shoot at a 5 1/2 year old buck that you’ve been watching on trail cam for several years versus a yearling doe? On a place that has very few mature bucks and an over abundance of does. Just curious.
If you have this mindset, then you clearly aren't bringing them to put in the real work before pulling the trigger. Are you not bringing him to check the trail cams, cut lanes, etc.?
I mean it really doesn't matter what they shoot if they think you show up early one morning, get in the stand, and shoot something within 20 minutes of first light is it?
I can tell you as a kid I never thought deer hunting was "easy". LOL, maybe my dad just busted my butt I don't know. But we were always scouting, looking for new trails, glassing, looking at maps, etc. I grew up hunting out west on public land so it was a little different. But owning private is no easier if you are the one putting in the work.
Lastly, if you don't want your kid to shoot a monster put them in a doe stand. I mean everyone has stands you are likely to see does but not a big buck. But I would never put anyone in a stand that I had less faith then another stand without good reason.

Certainly not as much as I’d like. It’s not my property, i just have permission to hunt it. I usually only go in August to hang stands and then i make several trips up there to hunt. Also i only Bowhunt up there so i don’t have box blinds or anything. And there are no food plots or feeders. This year I’ve decided he is old enough and can shoot well enough to hunt, so I’m gonna set up a couple ground blinds for us to hunt out of.

Honestly, no. I’d be excited as all get out for him to have that opportunity. I’d rather him get that chance than myself.

Set the kid up for makeable shots and kill the first one to step out. Give him plenty of range time with a .22. My son started killing deer at six. I put him on the fast track by killing every doe we saw ( DMAP tags). He killed nine as a seven year old and was on his way.
The ones who kill a big buck and quit hunting, are not deer hunters. No big deal. A lot of people aren’t deer hunters.
DO NOT say “Big buck”. That’ll get him excited.
One of our all time great family memories is an after school hunt. Six year old daughter, 10 year old son, and me in a two person ladder stand. Son kills a 150” at last light.
The key is to make it fun for the boy. Build a fire. Let him drive your truck or 4 wheeler. Teach him to whittle.

For his/her very first deer? I'm taking my 9 yr old son to my place in Oklahoma Tha
If you would let him shoot a doe, let him shoot a buck. You are overthinking this. It’s just a deer. He’s your son. Which is more important? If he shoots it in the arse so what. He might kill a trophy and you might die tomorrow (hope not, but we are all gonna die). Raising kids is about teaching them things to get them through life without you, and making memories they can look back on when you are gone.

Would you let your kid shoot a big buck?
Heck yeah.
Why would I ruin that experience of him killing a big buck.
I don't even care anymore if I kill one. I'm more interested in him having a successful hunt.
My dad never took the gun out of my hands. He believed in me and now I do the same for my son.
It's all about perspective.
What do you value more? The deers antlers or experiencing your son killing his first big buck with you?
