For his/her very first deer? I'm taking my 9 yr old son to my place in Oklahoma Thanksgiving weekend. I want him to kill some does, but there is always the possibility that a really good buck shows up. If he had killed a deer or two, I guess I wouldn't be concerned. But hell he may shoot the deer in the arse for all I know. BTW, he shoots fine "on paper". But as we all know, shooting at a target and a deer are not the same.

Well we didn't have to worry about a buck, but after a bunch of switching places in the blind, stopping the deer multiple times, he was able to make a perfect 75 yd shot on a big doe.

Absolutely, fire away. As long as you've prepared them and trust them I'd let them give it a go.

That's a tough one. You will have to remain calm as to not over excite him. He'll feed off of that.

Ideally, a doe or small buck would be best. But you can't control what comes out 1st.

Good luck

For me it wouldnt be an issue of whether or not he will miss/injure the big deer. It would be would i have wanted my first kill to be a huge potential best lifetime buck as my first one. Now that I am older and wiser I would say no. That is a tough call the OP presented

Are you really gonna make him pass a big buck if it happens to pass by first? I think we all know that answer.

Man. I hope I never care so much about horns that I would question letting my son have the opportunity to create an unforgettable memory.

Idk, maybe I'm reading your post wrong, and I hope I am, but if you're worried about that, you don't need to be taking him.

Well I wasn't going to spring it on him in the blind. I was going to have a conversation about it. Tell him let's see how he does on a doe or two.

One of my biggest joys of hunting was killing a doe, and then getting hooked on what hunting is about, and the passion of working towards managing and chasing a mature buck

It meant a lot to work fields and during the summer to try and produce a big deer

If you kill a monster first you may miss out on some of that.

If your reasoning is you want the deer for yourself you are an a-hole

No. I want him to kill any deer he wants. I don't give a rat's about the antlers. My thinking is he's more likely to miss or injure a big buck than a doe.

Maybe i'm overthinking it and should let him shoot the first legal deer we see.

I can picture myself snatching the gun out of a kid’s hands and shooting the big deer.

if you are worried about him making a poor shot what difference does it make if the poor shot is on a doe or a buck? either way an animal could end up suffering.

edit: just read your explanation of why a buck might make a difference. Maybe see how he does with a .22 on squirrels first? shouldn't get shook up for that.

My kid wouldn't be fast enough to get the shot off before I would.

OK fair enough. I see where you're coming from but I don't know how you will know that until you give him the chance.

Yeah that's kind of where I shake out.

I struggle with this with my 13 yr old. His first buck was a 15" 7pt. He made one hunt that year and within 30 minutes of daylight he had his first buck. He now seems to have the mindset it should always be that easy and its hard to get him to put any arse time in a tree stand.

Fwiw, he was 10 at the time and made a perfect 100 yard shot with my .280 Rem 700. I had to stop the buck 3 times while he was trailing a doe for him to be able to get the shot off.

from personal experience it’s a tough call, you can spoil em or ruin em with a quickness either way...

See. This was my reasoning I have used in this thread.

When my son is old enough for his first deer, I will take him later in the season where the bucks are completely nocturnal to avoid this situation
