How did we get to a place where:
GM has engine problems
Ram is moving up the ladder
Toyota has engine problems
Nissan quit the full size truck
4 years ago it was
Tundra the standard
Ram Hemi problems
Nissan was making Titans
GM had no engine recalls.

During the freeze/snow 1/21/25 my ford would shift wonky if not warmed up.

To another poster, gas milage isn't as bad as it was with the 5.7. Before I switched tires on it, I drove from Memphis to Columbus OH on a single tank. 576 miles if I remember right. I have 33" KO2s on it now and get 18 mpg
I get 14.5 with my 5.7 so that’s major improvement

Lubrication issue most likely caused by bad seals in CDF drum.

I'd recommend a GMC with the 3.0 Baby Duramax diesel. Mine has been flawless.
What kind of fuel mileage and towing capacity?
Mine is a 2022 AT4. Before I upsized the ties, I regularly got 23-24mpg on the highway, depending on how I was driving. I can't remember what my fuel mileage was when pulling a loaded down 5'x8' tailer, but it wasn't a huge reduction (maybe around 20mpg). A friend of mine had a 2021 Chevy Silverado LTZ with the 3.0, and we got 28-30mpg going just over the speed limit on I-55 on a trip once.
With the max trailering package, towing capacity is 13,000#. Without the max trailering package, towing capacity is 9,000#. I don't have the max trailering package.

Thanks! I drive like an old lady especially when I am towing anything. I suspect I might get close to doubling my 3500 mileage with the 3.0 and the max trailering package would do anything do. I had a 3500 ram cummins years ago and I got the same mileage towing as driving. That thing was a BEAST though....I seriously think it would pull 5 of the trucks I have backwards with them doing all they could do and the temperature gauge would never move....

the 10 speed transmission sucks

Looks like 4wd crew cabs with the trailering package and 60K and 22 and 23 models are readily available in the mid $30K range. Not the AT4 but the LT package. Very interesting. Thanks for the information!

I pulled a boat with one recently (2023 I believe?) and I thought it was very excellent. It pulled the boat as good as my 2018 3/4 ton diesel does. The transmission seemed like one of the best things about it to me.
Theyve FINALLY figured out that if you cut torque during the shift you can largely let the engine do whatever it wants outside of the shift transient. My truck of course makes about twice as much torque, but that 10 speed puts everything you want on the ground all the time. Its a much better towing experience than the older transmissions.

I dont know about longevity, but this all day.
For work I had a F250 with the 6 Speed and now a F250 with the 10 Speed.
The 10 speed is 10x more enjoyable in every aspect than the old 6 speed. Towing or not.

News flash, they all suck.
My 22 F150 has a clunky transmission, creaky plastic all over the interior, key pad came unglued from pillar, and DRLs are out on both headlights as of 2 weeks ago. 44k miles

FWIW don't be afraid of turbos. A turbo motor has been a round for a long long time. As everyone will say, take care of your things and it'll take care of you. If you're set on buying brand new, then you don't have much to worry about for a few years.

sliverado 5.3
Piece of junk engine, underpowered, and unreliable, in a piece of junk truck built by the unions Obama bailed out. I’ll pass.

Ever drove one?
Because im pretty sure a 2025 Silverado half ton with a 5.3 and 10 speed will outrun a 2018 dodge 2500 with a Cummins with 5,000 pounds hooked to them.
Nothing about that setup is underpowered. Nor are they junk. Trucks in the 80's were junk. Trucks in 2025 are expected to go 250,000 miles.
Now, im off to find cover from incoming anecdotal fire.

Yes my dad and a BIL have them. Junk.

So the 5.3L is faster than a turtle.

Whatever man. It’s the slowest half ton truck.

Only trucks that have a chance to maybe get that far on original engine and tranny is the ford 3.5L and 5.0L with 6 speed and the Toyota 5.7 and 4.7… maybe even the Chevy 5.3 but only with the old 4 speed like from the 2000s.
Everything else is/was junk. Any brand new 2025 truck from any manufacturer is a PoS. It sucks but you really can’t buy a truck that lasts anymore.
The only way to get a truck that lasts 150k miles in 2025 is to find a 2013-2017 ford with 100k miles on it or even better a 5.7 tundra with less than 250k miles.

Sounds like you know alot about engines and such…have any recommendations for something I could swap into my old 2002 Tahoe that just passed 350,000 miles on the junk 5.3 and original trans?
I mean, it still runs like a scalded dog and pulls a trailer with a pretty heavy Scag regularly - also my daily driver of ~70 miles.
I’m open to suggestions.

Your expectations are way outta wack. No 2018 diesel in existence is a turtle, and the new 5.3's are definitely not underpowered by any stretch of anyone's imagination unless youre a brand loyal retard.

What if I told you I know where there are ram gas burners going that long? The shitty horrible worst ever 5.7 hemi rams of all things.
Basically everything lasts that long these days with a little bit of upkeep and some minor repairs.
