I cleaned/sanded it, cut the bad end off. When I was cutting it, I was getting a hint of pine smell.
Someone told me cypress has a slight pine smell.

Cut it
If it’s red inside it’s cypress

Heart pine or cypress is what it looks like to me but I’m learning toward heart pine.

I helped a relative tear down an old cypress home so I've seen a lot of cypress. Cypress does not smell like pine but the two woods are similar. I think it is pine. I like the belt sander. Is it a cheap Craftsman or a cheap Harbor Freight? I have a cheap plastic Craftsman and it will work miracles on rough mesquite.

Pine for sure. The knots stick out like that in pine.

I would go a step further and suggest it is treated pine.

I agree. I thought it was a 2x6 from Lowes/HD.

Cypress, esp. the old growth stuff I've played with, has very narrow growth rings and has a unique smell, kinda sweet and not like pine IMO.

That is 100% pine, Cypress doesn't typically have growth rings that thick.

Quality, old timey heart pine would have tighter growth rings than that piece. By tight, I mean at least 8-10 rings per inch across on the end of the board. The rings on the end of your boards are much wider apart. The tree that produced your board grew much faster than the old time trees would have.

But your board is definitely pine.

I like how you roll. Just drop that sawdust right in front the garage and dont go in yard where grass would take it in. I do what I want! Track dust in the house? You betcha! I do what I want!
