I’m new to hunting in general. And even newer to any type of duck hunting. But where I hunt just borders a cypress swampy area. I have noticed while sitting in my tree stand I always see wood ducks swimming through. Like literally every time. And they’re pretty so I think I will try to get me one.

I have seen some larger amounts of birds all swimming together. This was last season. But more recently I have see two. A male and a female. Just swimming along together. Once I saw them at 9:30 am and today I saw them at 4:30 pm.

So now that I got my duck stamp and want to give it a shot I am wondering what is best time to get them? Also are these likely same birds? Thinking of setting up a water blind to get closer to the middle bc I can’t really get a clean shot with all the trees. They don’t come close enough to the shore. I’ve walked out in it and it’s not real deep. I will wear my waders out into it.

Thanks for any input.

at the crack of dawn or at dusk. they normally don’t responde to decoys or calls much. find a flyway and sit on it

Not recommending this for your situation but just to show you how wide open your choices are.

I had a similar situation last yr so I made myself a lot of trouble cause I wanted to do something. I would see woodies daily while in my climber on private prop. I wanted to hunt them from my climber so I did.

Had always wanted to shoot ducks from a tree.

They are, but they taste even better. Actually cooking some now.

See most very early. They come in hot. Be ready. They will buzz you and be gone in a snap.

That's probably the best bet. Just wade out to where you see them swimming. Wood Ducks typically leave the roost around daylight to feed then they scatter into smaller groups/pairs to do whatever Wood Ducks do until it is time to eat again about 40 minutes before LST. Then it is on like donkey kong right about 20 minutes after LST as they come in to roost.

I’ve always had the best luck hunting woodies by being somewhat mobile. Listen for them to whistle and figure out if they’re heading up or downstream. I generally start on the downstream part of our property and work my way up. Once you start getting close, put up the pop up blind and wait.

We don’t have any of the fly ways that you gulf coast boys have though so may not work everywhere.

Yes, so let’s kill it

Just fricking with you. I have one sitting on my wall as I post. They make beautiful mounts if you don’t want to eat em.

Guess I should have clarified. I want to mount it if I do get one. Ideally I’d get both the male and female bc they always seem to be together. If so I’d mount male and have the female for dinner.

So if they are seen regularly at weird times like 9:30 am and 4:30 pm do you think they roost there or somewhere nearby? It may not be the same birds obviously. If that’s the case then there are just random pairs of wood ducks swimming through this little swamp at random times.

They fly early. But we also hunt them by walking the creek and flushing them to each other. You could also float the creek and jump shoot them.

You don't have to be as stealthy as you might think when hunting wood ducks as you would with other ducks, or other animals in general. They are pretty reckless. I have had ducks fly in and land so close to me that they splash me when they land. I've had a wood duck fly into my barrel when I was aiming at a different one.

Like somebody else said, just spend some time and figure out where they want to be, and be there before sunrise. No need for calls or decoys. Just gotta be in the right spot. You'll hear their wings whistling, and a few seconds later they will be gone. Better be ready. They're very fast and agile, change directions quickly.

We do most of our duck hunting in thick sloughs, but If hunting a creek, and you have somebody else with you, one of you set up a quarter or half mile up ahead. Let the other walk up the creek towards you. Jump them up and send them towards the other.

This. Sneaking up and shooting them on the water is much more sporting than shooting them flying in to land and feed. Be sneaky.

I have a stand in Tensas River in Madison Parish. Almost every morning I can hear woodies calling up and down the river and see them swimming . High river now and they are in the backwater, 30yards behind me. A couple of years ago, 20 or so came up the bank and were feeding on acorns and corn.

do you make deer run before you shoot if they are standing still? Taking the best shot you are provided is the most ethical shot.
