Wood duck box use questions

I put up two boxes this winter because we had such good nesting results last spring/summer. This morning, 4 pairs were milling around in the general area and often going back and forth between the two trees with the boxes. Multiple times, there would be two hens standing on the top of the same box. First, will two hens lay in the same box at the same time? Second, what are they doing going back and forth? Like a duck open house?

When two hens are together like that it means they are cold. Have you considered burning that LSU sign to provide them with heat ?

They will dump nest a lot of times. Meaning multiple females will lay their eggs and one will have to incubate them all. She has to turn the eggs and if there are too many she won’t be able to turn them all and they will not make it.
When Wildlife professionals run across this they will chunk some of the eggs but I wouldn’t recommend it due it being a migratory bird and all

Yeah, I don't see me fooling around with the boxes absent some obvious and fixable problem.

It is called egg dumping. Ideally you should not have two boxes that they can see at the same time. Some will hatch, but a lot will just rot.

I’m not sure, but have read about it. Probably has something to do with a female not being able to make her mind up given a choice. Typical woman stuff. I have some boxes secluded and some not. The ones secluded only get another pair after the first ones hatch.

Now, a hooded merganser hen is trying to bust up in there.

I have not seen that yet. Would be cool. I do get owls and flying squirrels in my boxes.

And soon the Mexican squealers are going to dump nest the box. I believe if the Feds don’t let us blast black bellies during September teal season, they’ll eventually push out woodies.

It's pretty amazing what we see back here.

He can chunk them all if he wants. It's an egg not a fetus.

I need to be able to shoot Mexican squealers right now. I never see a single one in big duck season and I could kill 20 a day in my front yard right now.

Nope. The Migratory Bird Treaty Act protects eggs and even feathers of birds

Don't waste your time, Ron. I bet he's one of those that shares that ridiculous meme about fines for destroying eagle nests while abortions are legal.
