I don't think our personal experiences have any influence on the outcome. You like wolves. You think they are awesome.

Link? I've been bitten by a female, so not much of a fan. I do have a lot of respect for them though.

These damn wolves are killing all the elk in Yellowstone!

Seriously though, my mastiff was shot twice with a deer rifle and lived. He can pick up an inflated basketball and crush it easily. But i dont think he is quick enough to beat a wolf.
However, if he was able to grab the wolf by the neck once and bite down, it would be over with quickness.

My friend has a wolf hybrid. the claws are much sharper than my dogs.

Best fighting dog I have is my british lab, Short and stocky. She bites front leg and pulls it under the opponent causing it to fall. Then neck. Ball game

ok i used the term domesticated lightly...it was tame...i went in the pen but if they guy who owned it wasn't in there, along with my dad, i would have shite. I was pretty unnerved. Then again, I was younger and I had this same mental image that imagine most have about them. Now being older, experience and more confident I would still be wary but not scared. The thing was very long...it would stand up against the pen and be as tall as me and I am 6'3.

That is a good point...I never realized just how tough mastiffs were until I thought about getting one and started visiting breeders of different types. They rarely show pain. My two smack their faces on corners and pointy objects that I am sure would have broken bones and not even a whimper. My older one caught a glancing blow to the head by a cow and shook it off and kept after them. Much tougher than my other dogs.

Mastiffs are extremely tough and the skin is incredibly thick. Mine has been kicked in the head by a horse on multiple occasions. Same force can break a mans leg in half.

I have only seen mine get violent 1 time in 5 yrs after a strange >100 lb dog came in the yard and tried to mount my british lab. He rolled that dog easily.

That being said, I dont think he could win against a wolf unless the wolf made a mistake and allowed the mastiff to clamp down. Just not quick enough

Ok, my serious .02 in this discussion:

Wolves attack to eat and live another day. Getting hurt in the process is a death sentence for them.

Dogs bred to protect livestock from wolves are there to fight to the death to protect the flock/pack. It is not going to worry about getting hurt, it is not in its nature. Also, all it needs to do is deter the wolf, not kill it.

The animals have different mindsets. A wolf is awesome, but don't forget that humans have been breeding certain breeds of dogs for thousands of years to specifically fight off wolves.

Also, we can all agree that a donkey would curb stomp a wolf.

Have you thought of limiting his exposure to horses? Superman could only take so many kicks to the head from a horse. Please tell me you don't think your dog could take superman.

IF it came to a real fight, an average gray wolf would absolutely frick up 99% of dogs one on one.

Some of the breeds that are specifically bred to fight might have a chance. I'm not talking about guard dogs, just actual fighting dogs. And the dog had better hope for no snow.

I wouldn't call it BS but individually you probably will find differences.

LINK

quote:

Previous research has shown wolves are adept at solving the problem quickly, while domesticated dogs generally perform poorly and fail to improve significantly even after repeated trials. The wolves were also able to adapt easily when conditions were reversed, but pet dogs also generally fared poorly at this task.

Domestication has probably caused dogs to rely on humans for things that animals in the wild solve or do for themselves.

I didn't realize that a quiz was going help determine the winner in this fight, lol. Sorry dude but your repeated bringing up of wolves intelligence kinda shows your affinity to the wolves. Its cool man.

Hopefully we can convince admins that he is now somewhat sober when the next reinstatement thread rolls around. There's a handful of new cull bucks around here that could use a 55 gallon drum of purple painin'
