Will a catfish trap work in non-moving water in a large pond or lake?

Or do they only work in moving water of a bayou, river, etc?
Will they be effective this time of year? Will soap work as bait if the trap soaks for a week upon first setting it out .
TIA for any feedback and/or tips......

Was going to post similar questions today. We are at Old River and have seen dozens of traps most of which had catfish in them. I'm looking for tips as well.
Trap size? Color? Material? Bait necessary? Can the catfish back out of the trap? How long between checking? Is it ok to leave them out all week unchecked? Is this a seasonal thing or will they swim in anytime?
TIA

Sorry to say, but you missed the good catfish. Once the water warms up, those catfish get real oily. I can't even sell them.

Can't even sell it for Dogfood?

Homemade "slat trap"
I live on a golf course, just messing around testing my "Survivor Man" skills.
Lakes are really deep as they dug them out for fill dirt to build up the lots they sold.
Gonna put one down this weekend and let it soak for a week with some kind of bait, see what happens

What are the best months to catch catfish in traps?

Firefighter, we are on Old River and see some using PVC tube traps. Any tips? Thanks

What's the best bait to use in PVC pipe traps or home made funnel type traps? TIA

If you are putting a slat trap in a pond you want to put it where the opening is facing down. Not straight down, but on an area where the bottom is sloped pretty hard. They won't go in it if it's laying flat on a flat bottom.
Good luck with all the stinkpot turtles you are going to catch. If you are testing survivor skills, learn how to clean a turtle. A man can always catch a turtle.

Thanks for the tip on placement. I was going to just throw it out parallel to the bank. Will try to get it where one of the openings is on slope facing bottom of lake......

Those will catch nesting catfish. Screen on one side and a funnel on the other. This time of the year you can make a trap out of anything a catfish will hide in. Car tires, hole cut into a Freon bottle, ect. Doing it that way, you have to hand grab them.

Why do the catfish get oily when the weather and water warms up? Would that still apply in deep water where it would be cooler than on the surface?

My cousin has PVC traps on False River off of the pier. No need to grab them. He just has a rope tied off to the side wit the entrance. Has drain holes cut on the side with the cap. Just pick it up by the rope and the fish don't get out.
Leaving them a week seems like a long time?

Found some "original recipe" ivory soap with tallow. Will use that as bait when I set it out on Satueday.

How did the golf course pond trap work? Catch anything?
Do catfish traps work this time of year? Thinking about putting some in the Escatawpa River.

I caught a few, even though it was very hot weather back in August. Figured it would be better this spring. The soap as bait worked fine.

This is the kind traps we used around our camp.
