I used to use a bow in an urban setting for coons.
I have mine on a stand in my bedroom for this exact scenario. I have one that’s digging holes in my yard. I put out game cameras to try to catch him. Saw him pass on my ring this weekend but figured out when I got outside the light on my sight was broken.
Hasn’t come back since. Yet.
I have a .22 sighted in with the Quiet rounds. It’s not loud at all, but not suppressor quiet.

Point being I’d assume most .22s are better than a break action .17.
A break action .177 air rifle is good for squirrel and rabbit head shots from 50ft, not much else. You’re lucky you were able to penetrate that raccoon’s skull (maybe you just gave it a concussion before the point blank shot). Animals that have thicker skulls such as possums are impervious to .177 head shots - even point blank.

What are you even on about? We aren't talking about shooting it with a damn daisy bb gun. I've shot coons with a Gamo 177 and had the pellet go into their head, through the neck and out the belly.
Opossum and coons don't have thick skulls.

The one I had would kill squirrels but would not penetrate a possum skull.

I wondered about those Quiet rounds as well. They make those in long rifle, so I may buy a box of those and see which I like better. I don’t have a suppressor and not planning to go through the trouble of buying one for some coons.
I have actually seen 4 coons at one time on the porch, so I have an opportunity to compare rounds!

Then something was wrong with it or it wasn't even a half decent one. I was a opossum and coon killing machine with an air rifle when I was a kid. I had trash duty for rental places as a kid. If I didn't take them out I had to clean up the messes every day.

Not true, do it all the time.

Is drowning that much less humane than running off with a face wound from an underpowered rifle?
Yes.
Knowingly drowning one versus making a bad shot are very different things.

Good for y’all with your .177 break actions.
Get a larger .25 or .30 cal PCP and don’t look back at .177 (or .22) or wimpy break actions.

will a .22 short Kill a grown racoon
Yes, that’s about 10x the power of .177 cal air rifles these “coon killers” in this thread are swearing by.

I've got a .22 bolt gun with a oversized suppressor and all you hear is the action with subs. It takes care of anything I need it to

Man- I probably wiped out close to a thousand of them with cheap 22 thunderbolt and cci minimag and stingers as a kid.
You dome him from less than 50 yards he going nighty night.
Don't overthink it.

Yes, it most definitely will. Headshots if at all possible though.

Shot a coon with 22LR Stingers. He stood up to fight on his hind legs with half his head gone. Snarling like a sumbitch.

I recommend trapping them and then shooting them with the short.
Being in a neighborhood prob don’t want to just shoot at one, just incase the worst case scenario happens and you miss and the bullet goes into your neighbor’s yard and hitting something it shouldn’t. Again, it’s not likely but anything can happen.
To answer your question, yes a 22short will kill a raccoon.

Sure I am. Right between the eyes.
Did you read the part about half his head was gone ?
How hard is it to shoot a coon up in a tree, anyway.

Shot location will be important but inside 20ish yards it’ll carry plenty of energy to be deadly.
