I agree with this. But I've got to believe there is more to it. I just think the technology could be/or is there and for some other reasons (big oil, government, etc.) we haven't seen any big strides in fuel efficiency in the auto industry like we've seen in most other industries.

Car companies buy up patents like hot cakes. They are sitting on some of the best ideas right now and just waiting to introduce them when there is a demand
It all comes down to two letters, hp. As long as people want more hp, that's what they are gonna get
Manual Jetta TDI get 50mpg all day long. Why aren't they selling like wildfire?

Another reason is that companies don't want to shoot their wad asap. Introduce small improvements, drag that model out for 5 years, then introduce another you've already perfected.
Just like apple and iphones. The iphone 5 could have probably been released 3 years ago.

Because people don't care about MPGs as much as comfort and power. Bottom fricking line.

Exactly. They can say they do all day, but throw a flashy tv commercial in front of them about new interiors, transmissions, or higher hp numbers, and they will buy them.
Look at the hp and torque battle constantly going on between diesel trucks. Nobody cares about mpg, they just want 1 more hp than the next guy. Doesn't matter that you have to buy 100 gallons of urea for them to run. Doesn't matter that their expected life cycle is now 100k. Only thing that matters is those power numbers
It comes back to what I said earlier, people are stupid. You can sell them whatever you want as long as it looks and sounds good. Books to a blind person type of deal

This is a pretty good example.
My truck has more hp than yours so my dick must be bigger.

This applies to pretty much all trucks.
People who don't need trucks buying trucks fricked the truck market.
ETA: Also people buying trucks they don't need. People were getting from A to B just fine with heavy loads long before trucks were putting 800 ft lbs on the ground. Many people don't realize how fricking much 20k pounds is.

Just like Nashville pop fricked country music.

Probably. This could go on for days. There's SOOOOOOOO many reasons we don't see 30mpg full sized trucks out there.
I maintain that the main reason is that people simply don't want them bad enough.

Low step height, no manual trannies, weaker suspensions (some), tiny little beds that will never carry anything. I hate it.

Ok. But doesn't this frick it up for reglar folks who just want a truck to get to and from work and the camp on the weekend? And be able to tow a little boat around. IDGAF what the horsepower is for the most part. Part of the problem I have is even when you go down to the little Tacomas and shite you still not looking at but 23 ish on the highway.

Many people don't have the awareness and responsibility to be towing near that much.

You got that right. I know a couple of whistle dicks who get 3/4 tons and hardly hook up to 7000 pounds much less 15-20000.
As much as I'd love a diesel rig, I just can't justify it, because I don't need it at this point in my life. Very rarely do I say "man I really need a 3/4 ton. "
My half ton is good enough for right now.

Yes.
Not one single automotive company makes the vehicle I want. Nobody makes anything close, and it's almost exclusivly because the demand isn't there. Companies are going to make what they think people will buy, and people buy horsepower and luxury.

For those who want to read it, this is what it's going to take to get engines back to what diesels are currently capable of once you de-hippy them

Old people have it figured out with their old beater 40MPG civic and their 3/4 ton fun truck for weekends.

Yea people who are legitimately concerned about the amount of money they spend on fuel and maintenance don't drive trucks unless they have to.

Nope, but many people don't have the awareness and responsibility to go 70 mph in a boat and bass boats with 250's hanging off the back are common place.
You can really tell where a man's priorities are by what he uses his wallet on.

Or their company pays for it...
That's so prevalent in the south. Big fancy truck is one of the perks of a good job. Then the 40thousandairs want a big fancy truck too and next thing you know you see sky high jacked up 3/4 tons with white 24s and smokestacks.
