They do. Just not in Murica.
but yea I don't know why

EPA
Get rid of the emissions bullshite and many of the engines already currently in production would get better economy.

So why aren't they building smaller diesel engines to put in the half tons? I don't need to have the same towing capacity as an 18 wheeler. I just want to be able to tow little boat around and get some decent mileage.

Happy Valentine's Day, diesel lovers! Chrysler announced today that the Ram 1500 will offer a light-duty diesel engine when it goes into production this fall. Using the same turbocharged 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 recently introduced in the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Ram 1500 is expected to get even better fuel economy than the current 2013 model's best-in-class 25 miles per gallon on the highway.
Power output has not been released for the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, but in the Grand Cherokee, this engine produces 240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, and it will be paired with Chrysler's eight-speed automatic transmission.

They would have to design a smaller diesel engine for the US. As long as there isn't too much demand, and people are buying old technology, why make changes and be innovative? In the long run it might monetarily make sense, but with all of the changing emissions regulations, it does not in the short-term
Eta: They aren't in the car business to be recognized as being innovative. Comes down to the bottom line, which is fine right now
Eta #2: The only things that I can remember shaking up the truck market in the past 20yrs are turbos on diesel trucks, the Tundra because it is a Toyota, and the Eco-boost because it has twin turbos.

1)The EPA won't let them build such a motor
2)Even if they did, it wouldn't sell. People want horsepower, and a diesel engine making only 350 ft-lbs will probably have 200hp or less. It would pull the shite out of a boat and get fantastic fuel mileage, but it won't have horsepower, and horsepower sells trucks.

So basically it all comes back to Obama's fault.

Now you're getting it
Obama told me this
These trucks will never get the advertised fuel mileage unless you drive downhill all day long

Al Gore
The whole premis behind it is stupid.
Don't care what you do, you burn more fuel and you're going to be emitting more shite. Burn less fuel and you'll emit less shite.

eight-speed automatic transmission.
I would bet that, like in cars, this is for MPG reasons only.

Our government.

They say they want them, and then they go out and buy the frick outta 3/4 ton 4x4 diesels that get 15mpg.
The big 3 don't need to be inovative. There's no competetion.

I've never understood that. It takes more fuel to make more fuel. More fuel = more emissions. The only thing negating that is the companies paying to plant trees
Burning double the fuel for less emissions coming out of an engine does not make sense.

Without a doubt. Probably the most nervous feeling transmission ever.
But I don't like automatics anyway.

I have driven, I think a Chevy that had a transmission with all kinds of gears. It was constantly searching for the right one
When my truck shifts, it shifts like a man. It is the reason the transmission has held up to so much power

It's all about the bleeding hearts.
It's burning WAYYYY more fuel, but it isn't blowing black smoke so we can't see it so we're happy.
It's fricking stupid as hell, but that's what it's all about. That's why ALL factory exhaust is made to where it induces ambient air into the exhaust stream before the tailpipe. Make plenty turbulence and disipate any particulate emissions as much as possible before anybody can see them.

Serious question.
If this is the problem, why are the fuel milegage mandates that are set to go in place such a bad idea? Why not give the "big 3" a little incentive to build some more efficient shite?
And no I didn't vote for Obama and I love guns.
