I heard that Ford and GM were making around 8-10K on SUVs and trucks at one point.

If this is the problem, why are the fuel milegage mandates that are set to go in place such a bad idea?

Because the ability of the big 3 to meet these requirements is questionable.

ETA: Increasing fuel mileage is a good thing for everyone except oil, but it's approached the wrong way.

Like what, money? It costs money to make, test, warranty, and market new engines.

IMHO, they all could have trucks running 30+mpg right now. Why spend the money when you don't need to. Just introduce one small car that balances out the average mpg of each maker and not worry about fixing truck motors

There's not a doubt in my mind that they COULD. They'd just have to make changes that they are not willing to make.

How bad would making 30mpg trucks hurt big oil? Not like they won't just raise prices to match the lower demand. Hell. Demand probation go up since you could drive more

Probably not very much. They would likely alter the fuel prices to maintain profits.

ETA: I don't know shite about big oil though except that somebody somewhere is making an assload of money

Exactly. Plus the government is cramming safety standards down their throats every year.

Your old truck had 1 airbag. New truck has 12. Plus power everything, sliding heated powered everything with 4 doors and tons of leg room and enough sound insulation to kill a horse.

People keep asking for faster safer more comfortable trucks and that's what they're getting.

Yep. Wanna improve fuel mileage across the board? Step 1-manual transmissions. Get rid of fricking torque converters.

ETA: No matter what they say, people's priorities are not on fuel mileage.

You think it's possible big oil controls the big 3?

Even at $4.50 a gallon this summer?

Many people have an inability to look at multiple aspects of problems. I am not saying you are, but there are a few reasons that they wouldn't GAF.

Here is an example....

Manufacturers make more fuel efficient trucks. People start justifying buying those new more fuel efficient trucks instead of going with a small car like they really should be driving. Everyone wins because more, less fuel efficient trucks are sold.

Oil companies don't want to jack up prices overnight. It has to be a slow process that people don't recognize. If they go up $0.50 a night, people will ration their fuel usage and start carpooling.

There is a whole lot more to world markets than people realize. In the long run, they can do what they want and as long as it is a gradual change, people won't bitch too much.

They're probably in cahoots some sorta way, but if people started demanding more fuel economy with their wallets then they would get it.

Right now people are demanding luxury and horsepower, and they are getting it.

Nope.

They'll still be driving big trucks with towing and hauling capacities far exceeding what they actually need.

Well it's got to be cost effective in the end. I don't think anyone is going to pay $70,000 for a 30 mpg truck.

Chrysler's eight-speed automatic transmission.

I've rented cars in Europe and was pretty concerned with fuel costs. But even though prices were equivalent to approximately $9-$10 per gallon, we didn't spend nearly as much on "petrol" as we expected. The car we rented(mid-size) had a little 1.4 liter engine with a six-speed manual transmission (automatic wasn't even an option). I swear it got 60 MPG...when we were on what would be the equivalent to our interstate, we were cruising at about 75 mph at 1400-1500 RPM.

And this particular car wasn't even a diesel.

Hell, we're paying 60 for an 18 mpg truck.

People pay $65k for 15mpg trucks now, so who knows. People are fricking stupid and easily manipulated. I am guessing the big 3 have sociologists and psychologists working for them

No they won't. You can buy a frickload of fuel with that extra $40k.

Lots of things need to happen to start seeing large improvements in fuel economy. The engineering and tech is there, but lots of other parts are missing.
