Because Louisiana is a shite state run by corrupt political grifters that worry more about lining their pockets than investing in the state to make it more attractive and enjoyable to residents and tourists alike

Article about the mandeville pier that doesn't really say anything.

Was repaired last time for like $86k after being reimbursed by FEMA for 75% of the costs.

quote:

The mayor also said he thinks FEMA, at some point, will stop providing money to repeatedly repair the pier.

Until they do, fix it.

you must have a boat

Dude, you can pick a spot on the side of the road anywhere from Fourchon to Grand Isle and mop up on quality fish all fall & winter long. You can bounce from spot to spot, and find different water clarity, depths, bait, and types of fish. Then you have Elmers and GI beaches that are absolutely loaded with fish during the warm months. Its seriously *that* easy.

Gotta get out of that "boat or bust" mindset and look in to this type of fishing. A fishing pier is junk compared to these options IMO.

It sure is. It was shoulder to shoulder last weekend. Word was that they were slaughtering the white trout all night. Fun stuff there!

Amazing how people in this state just throw trash wherever they want.

Ya, the 2-1/2 hour drive one way kind of puts a damper on normal weekend or spur of the moment plans though.

I tried the fixed GI pier for a few hours about a week ago. They only fixed the bridgeside side. Caught only hardheads. Some wild people out there, pretty entertaining.

If you're around New Orleans area and looking for closer places without a boat...

There's a fairly new pier in Port Sulphur behind the school on Civic Dr

Bank fish off the side of Grand Bayou Rd in Port Sulphur

Bank fish off the side of the road between Reggio and Delacroix

Thanks for the suggestions, Im going to have to load the kid up one day and just drive.

The mandeville and slidell piers were just so close and its aggravating that all these other piers have been rebuilt, yet st tammany is just sitting on their asses doing nothing.

If the fishing was good on a pier there would be non stop fights in Louisiana. Pier rats are no joke and you are talking some of the worst people that fish on them because that’s their only option.

Ya’ll talk shite about people stabbing tires at boat ramps and fighting in Venice bars, a south Louisiana fishing pier would be incredible to just go with a cooler of beer and watch some arse whoopins.

Hell that is reason enough to build one, let people fish for free but charge for watching the fights!

It happens on Florida piers. I have seen folks try to push other folks over the side from Jacksonville to Pensacola over the years. Usually someone bait fishing on a fish finder rig on bottom and someone tossing lures at jacks and kingfish. When the inevitable tangle happens tempers flare and violence often ensues. Some piers painted spots during COVID to maintain social distancing and those spots are now considered personal property by many people.

You go to Florida and they have concrete (like an interstate overpass) fishing piers all over for the public.

Ours would resemble a landfill within two weeks. Fly covered chicken gizzards, dead shad, half eaten drumsticks, mountain dew bottles and lids of styrofoam icechests would be ankle deep.

Louisiana does not have much shoreline with depths that drop off as quickly as other gulf coast states. It would be impractical to have piers that simply go out into shallow water and marshland.
