Why are portable outboards so expensive?

After narrowly escaping frigid death on Lake fricking Fork last month, I thought maybe it was time to power the ole Alumacraft with something beefier than the Johnson 3.3 I've had since 1995.

But damn. A new Evinrude 6 is ~$1800, Mercury is about the same. The Honda 8 makes my dick jump out of my pants, but it's around $2400. I'd looked at the Yamaha 6 about 7 years ago, and it was $1000. Should have bought it, I guess, because they're $1500 now.

Ebay is no help. People want $500 for some shite from the 60's. I can only assume that the older ones demand such prices because the new ones are so expensive.

And then, there are the "alternate" brands. Sure, I can get a 6 for $700 or less, but what am I buying, and from who?

Anybody got a portable outboard solution?

I can't help you. I didn't think anyone bought those things anymore. Everything I see from my window on the lake is 70HP or higher.

Have you tried Tohatsu? Same engine.

ETA- I see you are looking for bigger than 3.5

Them motors are heavy once you get over 5hp, not what I would call "portable". A 7.5hp is going to be over 60 pounds.

You aren't lying. A few years ago, I was looking for a used 8-9.9 for my little flat boat and the amount people wanted for a ~20ish year old small outboard blew my mind.

My 3.3 is probably over 50 lbs. and is no problem. The 6 hp's I've seen are about 55 lbs.

But yeah, the 8 is 87 lbs. I'm really looking for a good 6 and clearly should have gotten one years ago.

In my part of the country we mostly use 6, 8, or 9.9 as our trolling motors. I have a 9.9.

Not very often do I see a minnkota style being used.

My guess is emission requirements are pushing more and more of these little motors to 4 strokes, which takes R&D, which takes money. I could be wrong but I don’t think Yamaha even sells a two stroke in any HP in the US market anymore.

The etech and previously the optimax had better emissions ratings than the current 4 strokes.

I don't know whether that is voluntary or govt. mandated, but

Voluntary. Direct injected 2 strokes are cleaner engines than 4 strokes. Manufacturers put their chips on the 4 strokes because the market was asking for it. People dont want loud rough 2 strokes anymore. The people shelling out the money were all buying the new shite

Cheapest yamaha I'm seeing is $1700 but the suzuki is about $1500 from OnlineOutboards.com and only weighs 52lbs. I think Honda is around $1500 as well online.

But you're right, small motors are outrageous right now. A new 2.5hp ranges from $700-$1100.

90hp, 50hp, and lower hp 2stroke yammys in good shape are in high demand due to weight savings.

Yea and I get that. I would love to have the optimax still on the market, they were light and relatively cheap. The new product lines are market driven though. The big money is in the big engines and people buying the big engines mostly want 4 strokes.

That makes sense. I know a lot of people say they want a two stroke for weight and torque then run a four and never go back, so I can see how it’s demand driven rather than mandated. I knew the etecs were still some variation of a two stroke but pretty well refined.

Yep. We all say we want a 2 stroke but the people out blowing the money are buying 4 strokes and that's what killed the 2 smokers.

The etech is as heavy as the 4 strokes and more expensive than many of them. They are badass but they negate many of the advantages of a traditional 2 stroke. All they have going for them now is performance.
