Small outboard prices are complete BS. When I was pricing 60-70hp motors they were all 9-10k. You can get a fricking 250hp for 18-19k.

like with many things it costs the same or usually more to build it smaller and they usually sell less of them as well

last time i priced them there was very little difference in a 20-25hp vs buying single digit hp motors

at a certain point the price stays relatively the same no matter how low you go

Outboard prices do get ridiculous. Take an older 150hp 2 stroke for example.

Same block, bore, and stroke as the 250hp. All they did was restrict things and detuned it to make it a 150hp yet charge thousands more for the 250hp version. Why? Because I guess they know your pockets are deeper if you require it...after all you did buy a bigger and more expensive boat. I can see a few hundred dollar up charge but thousands is a scam. Most of the part numbers are the same when you look them up.

About 8 years ago I snagged an in decent condition 1996 Tohatsu 2 cylinder 2 stroke for $400. Solid engine and Flys. Had to look hard on and off for a deal to pop up

I just go with dual 3.3s! You already have half of what you need!

WAIT! This just might work!

The one I have was just not cutting it in the wind, and I don't feel like dying of hypothermia in early Spring. I put a pontoon on the canoe because I'm getting old and I don't want to get yanked into the water when I hook a fish, but that doesn't mean much if I can't power through the wind and chop well enough when the fronts come in.

Plus, the throttle is on the motor, not the grip, and it has a self contained gas tank only, so when I run low (like if I'm in the middle of the choppy, cold lake) I have to fill it with a spare gas can into the top. All of that involves bending and twisting that I am sure I won't feel like doing just a few short years down the road. Plus, more and more of the parts are now unavailable. I've had to fab a couple as it is.

But damn. $1500 is a bunch for a small lawnmower with a little propeller on it.
