Going duck hunting for the first time in years with a family friend in Delacroix. Grabbed a Savage 20 gauge, went with 20 because I had my sternum cut open 2 years ago and mitral valve replaced and don't want the recoil from the 12. Which shells should I use? I already grabbed some black cloud #4, is their any others? Not sure if I'll be able to pattern the gun before I go.

Certainly not these in #4 shot. Because that would be illegal ..

This in a #4. I use to shoot black clouds. A buddy turned me on to Kent's last year and I haven't looked back. Excellent shell that doesn't cost $20+ a box.

Well someone must be an OT Baller. I can't bring myself to pay $18+ for shells. Not with the way I shoot.

I usually shoot the Federal Steel Shock in #2s. I find #2s hit the ducks a bit harder and since I hunt rice you sometimes have to take farther shots.

As others have mentioned I have also used and like the Kent Fasteel. I will also shoot Fiocchis in a pinch.

Kent Faststeel. But dont worry about shells, get a good aftermarket choke tube. Cant imagine the pattern with the stock choke is anything good. at least that way, you know there's consistent spread of pellets exactly where you aim.

You need to select a good choke first

Any recommendations on the choke? It's a Stevens 320 20 gauge.

Yikes! Kent fast steel. Two seasons in a row My friends and I couldn't get Fast Steel to cycle out of any of our guns. It seems like no one else besides us had this problem because they're very popular but I will never use Kent again. I go with heavy steel or even Winchester Xs. The winchesters are cheap but I've never had a problem and seem to do my best shooting while using them.

Can't make myself shoot Super X anymore after my "incident". I'm sure they've corrected whatever squib issues they had, but it was a known problem.

Stevens 320 20 gauge

depends on what kind of choke it takes. not sure all the "fancy" people make chokes for that gun. Quick search on Carlsons website came up w/ this.

says you can use either Winchester, Browning Invector & Mossberg 500 style threads. thats good news, those are available at stores.

A Browning A-5, Winchester SX3, Remington 11-87, and a stoeger. I don't know what model stoeger. The only gun that would cycle another shell on a consistent basis was an 870. Obviously no problems with that. We must have had a bad batch, I dno.

I got the carlsons waterfowl 3-pack and then shot a bunch of different shells over a couple of seasons to determine that my gun/choke combo patterned Kents the best. REGARDLESS- anything I shot patterned a LOT better with these chokes than with the factory chokes that came w/ my gun. If you're going out for a one-time or occasional thing, just see what you can get from Carlsons, Briley, or Trulock in an IC or Skeet #2 choke. Store shelves may be thin this time of year with hard-to-find gauges and thread patterns.
