I am driving to Uvalde for a bow hunt next week. I was wondering what would be the best route from Jackson, MS. I have been told to avoid the Baton Rouge and Houston route due to traffic. Somebody told me to go Shreveport, Waco, Austin, then San Antonio. Any helpful suggestions to avoid major traffic would be appreciated. Thanks again

Either way its pretty similar drive times. Just play to pass through BR and Houston at non rush hour.

I cant imagine why you are going that far with all the awesome hunting near you but I would go through Waco and such.

Edit: removed photo because my hunting spots were all pinned and visible lol

I'd take I-10 the whole way just time it where you don't hit either one at prime traffic times. Hit BR around 9:00, LC around 11 and Houston around 2 you should be fine. I drive to Uvalde every year and I go straight through Houston around 9 am with no issues. Baton Rouge is bad from 7-9 and 3-6. Lake Charles could give you come issues also. I'd probably look at Google maps for traffic issues and take I-210 if it shows traffic. There's been off and on construction on I-10 bridge. If it's a normal day 11:00 am in LC should be fine.

Do yourself a favor and drive through DFW and take Hwy 281 south; it is a smaller highway, that passes through a handful of towns. There will be lighter traffic, and it is a much prettier drive.

I took 35 down to San Antonio last Friday afternoon, and it took almost 6 hours. I got home on Sunday coming up 281 in about 4 1/2. 35 between Waco and Temple is all backed up with construction (as it has been for the last 10 years) and was much worse than expected at 2 in the afternoon. The loop around Austin on 35 will take you to the wrong side of San Antonio, so I am not sure it would be worth it if you are going West of San Antonio.

Thank you for the suggestions. Celltech, I hunt in the MS Delta, and it is great hunting. However, low fence South Texas hunting is just on a different level. I can't get it out of my system. Hopefully it will good down there again this year.

FWIW there is serious I10 construction between LA/TX border and downtown Houston. Many areas with two narrow lanes, zero shoulder, and concrete dividers on either side. If pulling a trailer I would avoid it like the plague.

This is exactly why I like this board. Thanks to everybody for the suggestions. I knew I would get some good practical help here.

If you don’t mind driving at night, that is the best way to do it. Leave mid afternoon so that you are passing through New Orleans around 7 take I-10 the whole way and you should be fine.

I’ll pull up my exact route last time I made the drive to Crystal City from Jackson. Uvalde is 45 miles north of there, I think.

I-20 west all the way to US 67 south of Dallas.

US 67 south to TX 220 at Chalk Mountain.

TX 220 west to TX 281 at Hico.

TX 281 south to Loop 1604 in San Antonio.

1604 west to US 90 west.

US 90 west to Uvalde.

It is not the shortest route, but it drives you smack through the Hill Country, which was worth it at the time to me.

20 to Marshall Tx, then 79 all the way to 130 toll east of Austin to I-10 east of SA, then 10/90 west to Uvalde would be the fastest route. You'd be avoiding Houston and I35, if time isn't a huge factor then the 281 south route would be the most scenic. Hope the rain doesn't screw things up for you, lots of land under water over that way, mostly rock so you don't have to worry about mud that much though.

That was the route I thought looked the best. I just didn't know if it was 2 lane on 79. Thank you for the tip. Hopefully the ranch is OK regarding the flooding. The guide sent some recent trail cam pics. Fingers crossed that a 160 plus steps out at 30 yards. Thanks again

How do you bowhunt out there? Serious question, never tried it. I grew up hunting free range around Junction. It was just rifle, though. The feeder would go off and the deer would come running. I'd

My rule on driving in TX is avoid all interstates at all cost. The two lanes are 75 MPH which is faster than most of I 20. Had a buddy coming from Starkville to meet me in Shreveport and he wanted to go I20, talked him out of it and his mind was blown that we beat map quest.

Get to Shreveport and take 79 down to Hwy 7 or Hwy 84. Hwy 7 is the best highway in America. NO traffic and you can go as fast as you can keeping it on all fours. Be sure to stop at Woody's Smokehouse/truck stop in Centerville,TX, trust me. Get to Temple and bypass to the South around i think Lott. Catch 190 to Fort Hood, Lampassas, then go south to Llano, Fredericksburg, Kerrville, and around San Antonio to Uvalde.

I'm really no help west of Llano and San Saba but it should be open country two lanes and smooth travel.

I would go to Alexandria to Leesville to jasper then 190 to Livingston to 59 then take loop around Houston to I10 to SA to 90 to Uvalde.

I would avoid BR and LC to Houston for sure. You will pass 2 bucees on my route.

I drive from Natchez to Corpus all the time. The traffic all depends on how you time hitting the metro areas.
