Why didn't they just try to pull him out going straight up the embankment instead of through another 400 yards of mud?

Wheres the fun in all that!!

Plot twist...

I rode back by Van Trow to get some pics for you Wick. The truck was already in the shop. I asked about it and after some serious eye rolls, the service person stated that it was an employee driving the truck....

Of course it was. Dealerships have to intentionally employ some of the dumbest people on earth.

All I am doing is browsing TD. I think I might go make a ride up to Van Trow.

Hooked to ball- not very smart. Pulling someone out of the median- not legal. Tearing up 100+ yards of median- not cool.

Downvote away.

Educate me on why hooking to the ball is not smart. Mine is rated for like 20,000 lbs. The only stronger tie point on the truck is the gooseneck ball.

First, using a tow strap vs a snatch or recovery strap. Recovery straps stretch and use that energy to help pull a stuck vehicle. Secondly, when towing, the load is constant and shear strength is constant. Using force when doing the recovery is a multiplier of force against the shear strength of the ball shank. The better option if you have no built in anchor points is to remove the hitch, put the loop through the receiver and put the receiver pin through the loop.

No, but I do have knowledge of vehicle recovery and safe practices. Looking to get certifications so I can become an instructor.

Hers another way of looking at it. Your lanyard (for you climbers) is rated for 1 ton fall, the hook is rated for more. Would you trust either if the lanyard had no snap hook and was just an open hook?

I don't get it. We circle the strap around the ball and them hook the hook to the strap. It's a back up.

Has been done by everyone I've seen pulling people out and I've not seen a problem.
