Say I was ready to purchase a new AR. What caliber should I choose and why?

Not the expert by far, but I guess they will want to know your intent for the gun. Hunting, plinking, etc.

What do you plan to use it for?

Just to have and occasionally shoot. Prices are as reasonable right now as they've ever been.

5.56 is the most practical for that due to ammo availability and cost vs. the other options.

If you're getting one just to have, i would say go with 5.56. The ammo is readily available and cheap.

I use the 7.62 X 39 for up to 200 yards and it does good for hunting deer and pigs

5.56 for just regular plinking, 300Blk is you want to suppress, 6.8SPC or .308 if your deer hunting

If you plan to potentially hunt with it, I would recommend an AR10 platform (308) like the Smith & Wesson M&P10.

Can you shoot pigs with a 5.56 or do you need to go larger (.308) for pigs as well?

556 will work on pigs.

Don't need 300 BLK suppressed. Save that $$

I built a 6.8 and a 6.5 Grendel uppers for deer and pig hunting. I like it better than the 308

It's fine for pig hunting. And if it doesn't do the trick, you got 9, 19, 29, 41, or 99 more shots at him.

I have 5.56, 6.8, .300aac, and am waiting on the barrel for my .308. The .300 has a suppressor and it gets shot the most.

Suppressor also fits on the 6.8 and it will fit on the .308 but I have reloading dies for the .300. Have them now for the .308 and I imagine I will shoot that gun a lot.

5.56 never gets shot any more.
ETA: the 6.8 did a wonderful job on the one deer it was shot at. Used 115gr TSX and destroyed a shoulder and had a 50cent piece exit. Deer dropped in its tracks.
