I've been hunting off of decoys that aren't mine. So, this year I asked for academy gift card, and I got a ton of gift cards, around $650 dollars worth. I'll probably also end up spending some cash to complete the set.

So OB members. If you were in my shoes what would you go buy. Let's say around a 1000 dollar budget. What brand, how many, what species?

Avian x or Dakotas. Depends where you hunt but I run gadwalls, pintails, teal, and mallards and I think I've got a few blacks also. Dakota flocked heads are really nice mallard floaters.

Dakotas, unless you're packing them in very far. Those things will whip you after a while.

You may be somewhat limited if all your GCs are to Academy...

Depends on the duck.

Avian X greys look meh. GHG pro grade greys look the best. Academy only carries a couple brands though.

Only problem with the flocked heads is you have to baby them so damn much. Other than that they look great. I like the look of avian X's too, but don't know much about them as far as holding up. I use G&H, been having them for over a decade and paint is still there.

Flambeau's are fine and reasonably priced. Hardcores at Academy are decent. Buy the Texas rigged weights, they are a life saver.

Avian x or prograde ghg. You pay a fortune for dakotas. Only one u might find at academy are ghg, game winner, flambeau, or carry lite. At least thats what they carry here

Higdon battleships. Next choice would be Dakotas. The battleships just stand out more in the timber.

A buddy had the flocked head Dakotas. For what they charge for them, they don't hold up if you are hauling them in and out.
I am cheap, so I don't know about the high end stuff.
If you pack them in, Look T the Banded Mallard decoys. They are shells and super light. LINK

I like the Avain-X I have had a couple dozen for two seasons and they are holding up better than my GHG decoys.

People get so worked up over decoys now... they gotta buy the best brands and the prices have become ridiculous. We still hunt with a few 20 year old flambeaus in our spread and have no problem getting ducks to work. My advice would be to get whatever you can find the best deal on... flambeaus seem to be priced pretty fairly. Academy's game winner decoys have improved a ton too. We buy mostly gray duck decoys now cause that's what we kill. But if you're hunting some place like the wax where you might want a bunch of decoys, I sure wouldn't want to spend a ton of money on decoys.

All good info. I will probably be swapping most of my academy gift cards for either cash or bass pro gcs... Was thinking of a dozen or 2 of Dakotas. Have heard they are special from people outside of the OB. Thinking of filling in others with a 2nd brand. 2 dozen Dakota mallards. A dozen teal. A dozen canvasback and a dozen greys

I have a majority game winner decoys. Their quality has improved a lot over the last couple years.

Just bought a dozen Dakotas with flocked heads.
They look absolutely amazing on the water.

That being said. I carefully packed them in a decoy bag on two hunts. 50 yd walk max and the flocking in some is tearing. Also the hens have beat up marks I would expect from throwing them around. Not babying.

All that being said, I bought hot but mallard ten yes ago and dragged them around the country no babying. They have held up well
