That pilot ended up dying in a crash in one of our fields. Putting out the first load of defoliant that fall, he pulled up and the wing broke off and nose dived. We named the field after him.
What was he flying? Pawnee or Air Tractor?

Looks expensive. Back in my day when I hit my cotton picker, all it cost me was an RC and a Moon Pie.

They’re Stearman’s. Lots of Stearman’s in the Delta.

So what you're telling me is they won't be making it to Jennings this weekend?

Guys goofing off in a couple of airplanes and hit the cotton picker.

To be honest, before I clicked the link I didn't think you meant an actual cotton picker.

If that farmer/picker driver wasn’t ok with them buzzing the picker he would have been cussing like Hell. Especially after the plain hit the picker. He was on the back just filming instead of making phone calls.

It probably wasn't his machine - maybe just a hired hand.

Local dealer was setting a machine up for 30” rows and had to take a spacer out of the final drives. Had picker jacked up and it feel off the blocks. Bent 2 of the heads. Cost $86,000 per head for new ones.

My dad used to tell a story of his crop duster when he first started farming. He was turning in his order to the pilot who flew fighters in WW2 and my dad said something like “I’m sorry to be making you work around all these power lines.” The pilot looked at him and plainly stated “Those power lines don’t bother me. You should have seen it over Saipan.”

That pilot ended up dying in a crash in one of our fields. Putting out the first load of defoliant that fall, he pulled up and the wing broke off and nose dived. We named the field after him.

I had a job in college where one of our pilots was retired USAF who flew combat missions in P-51 Mustangs in the latter days of WW2. He also flew combat missions in Korea and Vietnam. He was killed while on final approach to a small, rural, airport near Alexandria when he hit the guy wires of a near-by radio tower.

Don't forget Francis Gary Powers who survived getting got shot down in a U2 spy plane on the fringes of outer space only to be killed flying a traffic helicopter in Los Angeles.

I used to go to this event in the late 80's with my cousin who flew a Stearman. Talk about fun! Too bad that Holiday Inn motel isn't there any more.

Here’s an AT-802 that joined the Air Force and is all dressed up and ready for battle.
