I always say I'm going to take that 60- 70 yard shot at the snow geese flying over the pit but I never do...

Sky bustin to me has always been shooting passing birds that are simply flying through low enough to tease you. It’s not shooting working birds. I don’t think sky bustin does much to hurt hunting other than educate the birds to fly higher over your particular blind.
Shooting birds that are working is just shooting out of range and that’s not good for hunting. Now if they come in for one quick look, yeah that’s a gray area. But those birds that give you 3-4 looks but just don’t want to commit to lock up, that’s not sky bustin to me.
Eta: I’ve hunted plenty of blinds that it was basically just pass shooting. Tiny finger of private land right next to a refuge of some sort where your entire hunt every day is just hoping to catch a flock or two new dumb birds flying low. Not my or anyone’s ideal way to hunt but it’s that or sit on the couch sometimes. You aren’t even calling usually. So I don’t think that kinda sky busting has an effect on working birds over dekes.

I never ever sky bust. My entire goal of duck hunting is to watch decoying ducks....that is the thrill. Shooting at them as they waft in is just secondary. In fact, we have passed up shooting at large wads of decoying ducks just to watch the wonder of it. Just shooting at ducks as they fly by whether in range or not is not my cup of tea.

I expect to kill a duck every time I raise my gun. I'm not above pulling up on a 50 yard bird that's strictly a passing shot, in fact I sorta like that shot. Its not better than having them at 20 with their feet down, but a good shot rolls that duck passing at 50 all day long.
The guys busting at a bird or group of birds to "see if we can knock one out" are the same guys who never pick a duck, and may not even breast them.

Not saying there’s anything wrong with this, but you are spoiled if that’s the case. I think we all agree decoying birds with set wings is what we all set out to do. But I’ve gone days on end without having birds decoy and good pass shots are the only option.
You can duck hunt and you can try and kill ducks, they aren’t always going together.
There are some places where passing ducks whether high or out front or whatever are basically all you get.

If someone crowds me duck hunting then I start skybusting.

Well said baldona.
Nothing wrong with being a good sport, but I'm pretty sure pass shooting a duck in range is still sporting. Nash Buckingham didn't use Bo Whoop to simply shoot backpedaling birds at 25.

If you dont shoot at passing ducks you will kill very few where I hunt. I've never seen anybody who can consistently decoy wood ducks in flooded cypress. I think they take off knowing where they are going

There’s a big difference in pass shooting and sky busting
I’ve seen the neighbors sky bust geese and literally not change their flight pattern or wing cadence at all.

hunting without a soul around you that your shot can screw up birds they're working. Then I would consider birds landing middle of the cut, when they give you a straight over the top look prior to landing in middle, let it fly
