Hunted yesterday evening had a buck come from behind me at 5:25 pm, I’m in a climber and he laid down and waited till dark. I get down and hear him run off. That’s not my story though

15 or so years ago I use to smoke. I was in an area in wma where I felt good on taking a buck. Sign everywhere, way far walk deep in the woods. Only issue was all the trees were huge and the smaller trees I can fit a climber on were in bad spots. I decide I’m gonna ground hunt and had a little turkey blind to put in front of me.

I set up an hour before daylight, stake little blind in, break up brush in front of blind and have a big oak tree to lean back on. I expected deer to come from front or my right. Only area I had exposed was my left side. I’ve never been for grunting while on the ground because I feel buck can key in on me too easily. About 7 I see antlers 100 yards or so in front towards right side and I see it looks to be a 10 pt. Was too thick to shoot but I had binoculars on him. He was not coming my way though so I did a grunt. Then I hear noise to my right side 10-15 minutes later but never see a deer.

About 30 minutes go by and I’m trying to light a cigarette in cold weather. Striking like hell on my lighter only to see antlers in my peripheral view to my left. I’m inhaling the cigarette to make sure it’s lit, look to my left to see same big buck literally 20 yards from me high tailing it out of there. Cocksucker circled around behind me after I grunted.

I’ll just say, every noise isn’t a squirrel, I’ll leave it at that…..

More times than i can count. You hunt enough, it happens. Miss them, wound them, get busted by them... you name it, it will happen. Sucks, but thats what makes the success so nice.

Amazing some deer sound like a bull in a China shop coming in and some you hardly hear them at all.

Hunted heavy buck sign in deep deep isolated patch of woods for 5 days strait.

Last day before I go back to work I go in for an all day sit.

I see a buck. It’s a shooter without question. Made the call to shoot immediately. Would have been a PB

50 yds give or take

Clean miss.

That’s one I wish I had back.

Close 2nd

I’ve been hunting for a couple of weeks with no gobblers heard.

Finally get a gobbler to respond. Gobbled 8 to 10 times and then nothing. After 45 minutes to an hour I had to decide whether or not to go looking for it or stay put. I get up walk about 20 yards down the road and the gobbler is standing there looking at me. Another two or three minutes and he would have been dead

Yep, I know the feeling. I once shot everything in the woods but the buck. I shot so many times I don’t even think he was scared of humans anymore

I always slip to a box blind without making a noise. I was 15 yards from a blind I loved to sit in. A very nice 10 crosses the road broad side maybe 20 yards from me. I raise up and click. No round in chamber. I bolt one in but he’s gone. I’m still pissed about it. I don’t leave the camp without one in the chamber now.

Hunting a pipeline during the rut I see a doe pop out and shoot across the ROW, I watch with my binos just knowing it’s to far to shoot about 650yards or so when the buck pops out 16-18in 8pt. He runs half way across then hits water and gets all panicked and s doubled back. I realize he had hit the water so I almost jump out the stand and take off running trying to close the distance before he gets back out. I make it about half way when it pops back out I drop to my arse and rest on my knees hold the second dot of my reticle and squeeze it off. Shot felt good but he just starts trotting off.
Buddies son several hundred yards away saw the whole thing and told me it was a clean miss.
That night I kept replaying the shot and it dawned on me I should have held first dot not second for the yardage. Totally blew it and still can see him standing there till the day over 10-12 years ago.

I killed a doe on the last day of bow season and got it on film. The next morning is opening day of gun season so I didn’t want to bring all the camera equipment.

About 7:30 that morning, 5 does start coming out of the branch up this little draw. They’re just milling around feeding. So I pull out my phone and start recording. A minute or two in, I see something about 15-20yds to their left. It’s a buck but his head is down. I put my damn phone up and put the scope on him. He’s 75 yds out in heavy cover with his head down. Finally a doe blows, he looks up and hauls arse! He’s a shooter and I make a terrible Hail Mary shot. I found hair but no blood. Should’ve never shot.

I don’t think I’ve ever shot at a deer farther than 100 yards

Over the years I’ve had many should have never shot. I’m at the point now I for the most part hold off if they are moving fast. A doe blowing at you is just infuriating, especially if a buck is around. A doe will blow at anything to make matters worse, I’ve seen them blow at other deer and possums, squirrel, etc and run everything off

Just think about the biggest 8 pt you can realistically imagine, then imagine sending an arrow 1” below his chest at 20 yds an hour after daylight with the sun shining on his back, then watching him run 75yd and stop, then go back to eating acorns for an hour. Something like that.

A buck an entire club had been watching for 3-4 years and all dreamed of killing, but he only hung out in the deepest parts of the swamp and only made a couple of appearances a year on camera way late at night. First day of dog season in 2011 or whenever everything was flooded. Swamp waters were too deep for the hounds so we just decide to put out a stand row anyway and see if anybody bumps one. First step out of the boat and I’m over my hip boots, shite.

Get a couple hundred yards in and set up on a downed tree. Cold, wet, hangover from hell, 0 confidence.

We blow the hunt off and people start heading back to the boat when I hear what sounds like a water Buffalo sprinting through a river. The big sumbitch pops out 30 yards from me staring straight at me. I throw up the mossberg and send a round 00 buckshot pellets right at what I could see if his neck, which was barely above the water line. He trots off and I throw a couple more prayer shots at him. Walk up to the tree he was standing next to and and find most of my buckshot at the height where his antlers would’ve been. Over shot. I don’t know how many 16oz Keystones I drank that night but I had a flat and not many left the next day.

That seems like an overcorrection.

Why not just create a stand ritual where you load and secure your gun? Your method seems to increase the risk unduly without any advantages.

I was around 15. Was a bit bored. Mid morning. I thought it would be a great idea to get out the grunt call. I hit it a few times like always not really expecting anything. I looked up and a huge 10 point mature deer was heading directly to me. I was like WTF. I hit the grunt one more time, except this time the diaphragm was wet with my breath moisture and it sounded like a horn. Ole boy did a 180 and gave me the tail.

Thanksgiving week. Hunting a blind that I haven’t hunted in years. Dad was with me and I had put him in my blind a bit earlier. He’s texting like crazy about all the shite he’s seeing and I’m trying to get settled in and figure this blind out. I haven’t been up there 5 minutes and a big deer comes in moving quick. The kind of determined movement where you know it’s not going to hang around long. I confirm that he’s a shooter but don’t have an immediate shot. Also I realize the chair/window relationship is way off so I quickly find something to shove under my arse. I find a window in the brush and tell myself if he gives me an opportunity there I’ll take it. He stops perfectly in the right spot at 160. I’m dead steady, perfect sight picture despite the odd seating situation. Breath, press, CLICK! By the time I got one chambered he was gone. I always load my rifle after I quit dicking around and am settled in, but I hadn’t gotten there yet. Biggest deer I have ever squeezed the trigger on.

First deer I ever shot with my bow was a big doe on Thanksgiving morning about 10 years ago. I was super excited. Knew I made a good shot and heard her crash about 75 yards away. I climbed down, found my arrow and put my bow down next to it. Climbed back up in the stand and looked for a good marker tree in case blood trail stopped. I found a tree with a big white mark on it and then noticed a glint...from an antler that was apparently trailing the doe id just shot. The big crab claw 9 point came right up the trail to the spot I shot the doe - 17 yards. Stopped and looked at my bow on the ground. Looked up at me in the tree. And hauled arse.
