What’s up with Jim Shockey?

Watching videos from these convoys in Canada and Jim continues to remain silent about everything happening in his country. You would think a man that makes his living with guns and by profiting off of what I would assume are like minded hunters would have pretty strong opinions about what’s going on.
And yet he’s not said a thing. Do I just not know who he really is?

He actually has a few times but his wife is battling lung cancer right now.

Hate to hear that. He’s a huge voice in the outdoor community. Especially in Canada and they could use his leadership.

Going on a moose hunt through his outfitter is a bucket list hunt for me. I really hope his wife recovers and they can get back to hunting.

He was pretty outspoken on a lot of it until he found out his wife is dying. From what he posts on insta it seems like he is just trying to make the most of what time he has left with her.
ETA: My uncle tells a story about running in to Jim Shockey at an airport. He asked if he were Jackie Bushman and Shockey laughed then said close enough.

Jim has always been somewhat liberal minded. I believe it started when the US and Canada boycotted the 76 games in which Jim was a member of the Canadian water polo team.

Very laid back dude. Had breakfast with him one morning as he was waiting for some of his hunting clients that had been out all night partying and he couldn’t get them up. Don’t know his politics, but his dad was alive then and he was just starting to guide on some new lease he had in Northern Saskatchewan. His dad was a hoot and Jim just kept apologizing for him. I know some other guides I deal with in Canada and they pretty much hate their administration in Canada, but the way things are they are and how controlled everything is, I doubt you’ll hear much from them, and especially Jim…. Just not the type

The only thing I really remember him speaking out about was when the government placed restrictions on bear hunting. They basically made bear hunting illegal and lots of people and their property were hurt.

I’m not really a social media type, but he’s been pretty outspoken about Canadian covid restrictions on Instagram.

i follow him on IG and he's leans right, follows Uncle Ted & others and is often critical of Canada's liberal NDP government.
Unfortunately, yes his beautiful & healthy wife is battling cancer.

When I say this, I mean as compared to Nugent, Waddell or Robertson.
Jim isn't one of my favorites. In the past he's used his leverage with the Outdoor Channel to create situations that all but prevented smaller producers from seeing their work reach the air. He's a great businessman, but Jim has and will always be about Jim.

Honest question. How can you be as successful as he was without being incredibly assertive, shrewd, and, to some, more than a little selfish? In my circles, I’ve hear the same about Toxey, Will Primos, P Pittman and others. As far as I can tell, their goal was to build an empire for them and their families, not be nice guys.

I met Preston Pittman in 1988. He was a regular, friendly person. He gave us a few Black Diamond calls, and worked with us about 45 minutes. He did not seek fame. It sought him, at the world champ call contests.
Toxy was a camo nut, period. I hunted those days, and before Jim Crumley, we were making camo with Rit Dye. Its just they had a vision and moved forward.
Some of the people from the good ole days were indeed all about building their empire. David Hale, Fred Bear, and Jeff Murray, though i respected Jeff. Myles Keller was a dedicated mature buck hunter. He didn't seek the stardom. It sought him.

Now, Noel Feather was a jerk, look at me person, and not because he got caught. He was like that before.

I guess it all depends on the path you choose to take.
True, Toxie and Will are both extremely nice men, but live by the motto....it's only business. Toxie is a little too clannish for my liking, but Will is an absolute gem. On the flip side of the traits and characters you mentioned, there are guys like David Hale and Harold Knight, Paul Meeks, Jim Crumley, Phil Robertson and dozens of others who simply built a better mouse trap and got along with everyone, allowing their products to capture their share of the marketplace.
At the end of the day I absolutely do not fault Jim for his actions and how he built his business. It's just not the way I would have handled it personally.
