My kid wants a quad for Christmas because he rides his cousin’s 110cc and loves it.
I’m looking to spend around 1k and looking for around 150cc.
Any advice is appreciated

I may be downvoted and that's okay, but I think 9 is still too young for an ATV. shite happens quick and there's no protection in a roll over.

I'd suggest a go cart with good cage and harness. He'll have a blast and learn some car like driving skills.

My two cents, but by no means am I'm preaching. If you want to get him an atv, do it.

Go ahead and up that budget a little and get you a good brand like a Honda or Yamaha. You may find a unicorn and get a reliable one, but those cheap Chinese brand 4 wheelers are junk.

Buy him a good one and then when he outgrows it, sell it. They hold value well

That makes it difficult.

If youre handy.

Buy a ratted out atc 70 and put a brand new lifan engine in it. Bolts in.

He'll learn body English and everything else needed to ride correctly.

My oldest found a Chinese bike on FB marketplace for a couple hundred bucks. It didn’t run. He loves working on small engines. He bought it for my younger son, cleaned the carb and the thing runs like a top now for over a year.

Should have seen his little brother’s eyes when big bro came rolling in from LSU with a 4 wheeler for him

Anyway this is just one experience out of thousands but my 2 cents.

The Chinese bikes are not terrible but you have to commit to changing the carb out and all the fuel lines.

The fuelmlines are shite and foul the hell out of the carb.

Once all that is changed out put NGK plug in and get the thing hot and change the oil immediately.

Enjoy.

There are some instances where you have to put in a momentary toggle on to start to bypass the cheap arse wiring.

I got my 70 when I was 5.

I can't be the only one.

Oh I am sure you are not. Hell I drank and drive like 1000 times growing up. Just because a lot of folks do it doesn’t make it a good idea.

C'mon man. You know most of us grew up riding around 110 Honda 3-wheelers. If you teach him how to drive responsibly and lean it won't be a problem. You'd probably make him wear a helmet while riding his little 4-wheeler too, huh?

9 is too young? My 2 year old is on a 36v, rubber tired four wheeler with a twist throttle. He has already learned throttle control and loves to go ride in the woods following me.

I suggest looking at a recon over the little china ones. Its may be a hair big for him now but maybe not. I got one for mine at 8 2 years ago and he had no trouble riding it. My daughter now 8 drives it with no issue at all and even my youngest son who is 4 can drive it pretty dern well. Of course he isnt allowed on it without me or the wife on there but he drives it by himself. He will outgrow those little 110s in a hurry and youll be looking for something else. I got the 2006 recon for $700 and runs like a top. Only thing I had to do was the breaks and a battery.

All that said we limit them to 3rd gear and it is a foot shift so they cant shift it yet. In 3rd gear it has plenty of "go" but not enough to really flip it or anything unless they juts really messed up and they have to wear helmet at all times on it.

Chinese is your best bet for that budget. Be prepared to work on it. Best price is usually online at TX motorsports or one of their competitors.

I know they can be dangerous but some of the best times of my child hood was riding four wheelers and we always rode full sized. 9 is young, but we were younger when we first started, and some of my friends had 3 wheelers (which were so much fun but I'm getting off topic). I know you said you're not looking for that specifically, but the modern equivalent of a bear tracker or 250cc (not in the loop with current brands) would be something he could ride for a long time to come. Anything too small and in 4 years he may be too big. Just my 2 cents.

My 8 year old has a Honda 90 and it’s a good size for him. He may outgrow it around 11-12, but there’s nothing wrong with that size. I certainly would not go any bigger until they had a lot of time riding. Hell I jump on that thing and it scoots around just fine with me on. I liked the Honda specifically because it has gears and forces him to learn how to shift and listen to the engine. Most others in that size are automatic. It also has a governor to keep it in check until he’s really ready for it.

The Polaris 110 is a little “sportier” with the taller suspension, but I like the reliability and resale of the Honda.

For $1000, you’re not getting much. Chinese bikes are fine, but you’re gonna have to work on it. My parent bought mine a Chinese 110 at first, prob spent right around $1000. $700-800 for the bike and another $200-300 for somebody to work it over. It ran fine I guess. Would get heat soaked and not start until it cooled down. Also required starter fluid to fire it up. This is why we decided to get him the Honda.

He absolutely loves it though. He wears a helmet, and we keep an eye on him. He has learned to ride responsibly and I think it’s an important part of childhood. Him and the neighbor friends ride all around our property.

Yeah I am sure they make a lot more kid friendly ones now. We all road our dads and what not. I do remember they were all manual, and my buddy had a banshee and his brother had a raptor and they both had a handle clutch where the bear tracker and similar kinds did not. I guess more automatics came around later. I knew a guy who had a Honda 90 though when we were like 13 and it was fun to ride for sure.

I would look for something like a used Honda 200. They are tougher than hell and while they are not a hoss like the old school 300s its small enough to not hurt him and big enough that he can grow into it for a few years before he is ready for something more stout.

I had one that I consistently wrecked the shite out of. Bumps, bruises, scrapes....nothing permanent other than a couple of scars.

Basically enough to be fun but usually not so big to really screw you up when your a dumb kid and it lands on you.

I legitimately feel lucky to be alive after all the dumb shite I did between the ages of 6-21. So yeah, my kids will wear a helmet if they are driving themselves.
