So, I some how lost a spinning reel a few weeks back. It either bounced out on the way home or we lost it on the water. I mostly fish baitcasters but will occasionally throw a spinning reel if I'm strictly popping corks. I always like to bring a few spinning rod/reels with me for other to use though. Anyways I came across this deal...

Penn Battle ll - $60 on Amazon
Abu Garcia Vengeance Rod 7' Medium - $30 @ Bowie
Suffix 40 lb Braid - $9 @ Bowie

Brought this shite home to my fiancé and told her I had a gift. She wasn't too thrilled.

I feel like that is a damn good setup for $100, I was pumped.

Take your candy arse to the OT, this is the OB and he's asking a real question.

I think that's a good setup. Not exactly on my level of "budget reel". That's a good setup. I bought two Daiwa spinning combos for $25 each since in laws are coming next week. That's budget to me

And I answered it. IWFI-I Would Fish It.

Good grief-touchy. I didn't realize jokes weren't allowed on the OB. My bad.

Not a bad little set up. I would go lighter line on the braid though. I fish 15 or 20lb braid and never had a problem with a redfish popping my line. The problem I have with the heavier braid like 40lb test is that it is hard as hell to pop once it becomes snagged. The lighter line also casts much better. That's what drag is there for.

Also, if anyone is interested, Cabela's is still running their Fenwick SilverHawk II for $60. Its a good rod for $60. Good cork and Fuji Alconite guides.

I fish the 40lb on a 3000 size reel because oyster bars and structure are a motherfricker on braid.

Are you tying the braid straight to the lure or using a leader?

Can I turn this into a "Rate my Rod and Reel" thread?

I just bought a Pflueger Monarch bait caster for $30 and i put it on a Berkley 7ft MH Lighting Rod which was $40. I use 10lb mono. This is my back up rig for bass fishing. I was told by a buddy i fish with to get this reel when i asked about a cheap backup setup. Showed me his, said his seems nearly indestructible. It was 5 stainless steel ball bearings, its smooth. i chose the rod simply because thats the type he had his on.

Holy crap! You gotta learn man! You NEVER show your wife/fiance new stuff like that. You sneak it in and hide it and then if she ever asks anything about it, just claim you've had it forever.

You better learn quick, man!

Not a bad setup.

I've heard mixed reviews on the battles, especially fishing saltwater.

Weren't the ones on Amazon the 1000 size? At least when I looked that was all there was.

Good price on the rod and braid too.. may have to run by Bowie later today and see if they have any more braid on sale

40 lb fluoro leader 6' long, if I'm throwing X rap or Yozurri.

80 lb if I'm throwing Fishwhistle jig.

If I'm on a grass flat I'll bump that fluoro down to 20.

That's a good setup. I have Battles on a 7" matched Battle rod and another on an Ugly Stick. Just the other day a buddy used mine and now he wants one; he was used to true "budget" rods.

Was it a gift for her? She should appreciate gifts and having such a resourceful man.
