What to do with old 12v batteries

I have some old 12v batteries I need to get rid of. Will most auto parts stores just take them? Is there any place that will buy them?

You do an exchange when you buy a new one, and you get a bit of a discount on the new battery.

I am aware of the core swap but I have some extra ones laying around. Any new one will be core swapped with the existing battery in the vehicle and/or boat.

Ask a gen zer. They need to figure out this problem long term anyway

AutoZone will give you $10 gift card for each. Others may do the same. Exchanging the core with purchase is a better value, of course.

Some battery shops buy old batteries. Search it up in your area.

If you are not worried about collecting a few dollars throw it in the trash can and let your grandkids worry about what is under their golf course community 50 years from now.

That is a fact. I brought 3 of them just to dispose of them and they gave me a $30 gift card.

I have the same issue. I core swap the oldest ones when I buy a new one and I use the old ones that generally have some life left for things that don’t need a lot of juice. But the ones that are useless I take to the annual hazardous waste disposal day that our town or parish has each year

Lead is going for .89 to $1 a pound. There is 16-20# of lead in a battery.
Start reloading and pouring your own bullets.

Last fall I purchased a NoCo Genesis smart charger/desulfator after reading a few reviews. I was about to replace the battery on the wife's car, which was almost $200.
After using the NoCo charger, on the desulfator setting, it brought the battery back to factory amps. Since then I have used it on probably a dozen batteries that were several years old and end of life. Every single one, even one that sat in an old tractor for probably ten years, came back to life!
It only "desulfates" 12 volt, lead acid batteries. It works on car and 12V lawnmower/ATV batteries.
Spending $100 on the NoCo saved me several hundred so far, and much more if I count the batteries of family and friends.

I heard you can just throw them in the ocean

O'Reilly will also give a $10 store card for a car/truck battery. They will also take lawn tractor batteries without giving a card.

I just bought some new boat batteries, the core charge at O’Reillys was $22. If you need a battery that doesn’t have a dead replacement to turn in, that would make a big difference.

Yep. I always keep one car and a lawn battery back to cover core charges.
