Thanks. I was quoted 9500 for a 14 seer and that's just using existing ducts. They're in good shape. Thought it was a ripoff and apparently it is.

In the last year I have replaced my downstairs unit (3 ton Trane) around 4300 combined for inside and outside installed by local company.
I have also replaced both 5 ton units at the camp, paid around 5 grand combined but using free camp labor for install.
some of these prices are unbeliebvable

Depending if they can use the same copper lines the labor should be around $1,500-$1,800
A new 3 ton unit with air handler is around 2,500
depending on brand. I just got a new one ( RUDD ) and did 95% of the work myself including running new copper lines.
Anything under $4,500 is about the norm to have it installed.

I installed 2 2.5 ton replacement units, outside and inside last year, Trane brand for $8600, so probably $4-5K for one.

How many residential homeowners jump at the chance to spend 10k your 20 seer 3ton?

Yeah, I think this guy quoted me for a 14 seer 5 ton, using existing ducts, and it was going to be around 5 figures. The guy I have coming out today will probably be half of that.
Any advice y'all can give me on brands? I've heard both sides of getting a Goodman. I think he also sells Rheem and Bryan.

Found online...
Only one i've heard bad about was Goodman. Obviously Trane, Carrier, Rheen and York are good brands. Mine is a Heil and it has been good.
ETA - I know very little about ACs except for what my BIL has told me.

Trane, which also makes American Standard
Carrier, which owns Bryant, Payne and Tempstar
Lennox, which owns Ducane, Armstrong, Concord, Allied and AirEase
Rheem, which owns Ruud
Goodman, which makes Amana and Janitrol
York, which makes Coleman and Luxaire
Nortek Global HVAC, which makes Maytag, Westinghouse, Frigidaire, Kelvinator and others

Thankfully the guy that came out yesterday got my Lennox running again. I found a blown capacitor and put a new one on it Monday. There was a smaller, black plastic can next to it. It looked like a smaller capacitor, but all of the ones I've ever seen were metal casings. He confirmed that's what it was, and that is what had blown out. He said someone redneck engineered a hard start kit on it, and told me that true hard starts have a relay that cuts them off right after the unit starts up. It was blown, so he removed it, checked everything else out, and had it running and blowing cold air in about 20 minutes. Freon levels were great, and the compressor and fan were great too.
He also quoted me about $3,200 to replace it with a 3.5 ton, 14 SEER 410a Goodman, and around $4,600 to replace it with a 5 ton Goodman, but the main difference there is my air handler inside has a gas furnace, and I would need a 24 inch gas furnace below it. The current one is 18 inches wide. He said it would be about $1,000 more for the furnace and install of that, and the HVAC itself was a little more being a larger one.
He also said I could shop around and find whatever brand I wanted, and that he could put another Lennox in as well, it would just be the price difference between the two. Much more affordable than dealing with a large company. But that I should be able to get several more years out of the Lennox that is in there now, just wanted to give me options if I wanted to upgrade to something more efficient at some point in the future.

Jimkidder is fkn somone to DEATH on a trane unit! Jesus age Christ, don't buy shiiit from him. Seer ratings will vary in cost but less than $5000 installed 401A coolant. There is a few R22 units left around and can still get them if you know what's up. but R22 coolant is now thru the roof and really negates savings on unit.

Paid $6,540 for a Lennox 2 ton 16 seer and a 4 ton 16 seer 2 stage unit.

$2700 is what I paid for a RUUD installed. Licensed installer doing side work and a neighborhood hero to many of us.
