re: What shotgun should I get for my 11 year old son?

If its his first gun and he hasn't shot too much, I say pump or an OU. IMO a semi auto is not for the novice from a safety perspective. At 11 yo, I would go with a 20 ga. You can always upgrade to a semi auto 12 ga later. Then he can have options, 20 ga for doves, 12 ga for ducks. And a guy can't have too many guns.

I purchased my 11 year old by the Rem 11-87 youth 20 auto. He loves it, but it doesn't like the small cal shells, like the low brass. They get stuck. Don't like those shells anyway.
I will upgrade him later on but this is a good gun, it has the stock add on pieces. I got it one it was free tax weekend for LA sportsmen.

Thats why you use it as a single shot til they get proficient with it.

An acquaintance told me to look at the Berreta A400...12g for me, 20g for the little man...
They are super nice and feel great. I thought about one myself but I am in a 16ga buying spree.
This is a good thread I need to get my boys guns. My oldest is ready for one and my youngest is ready for a .410

Bretta Xtreme 12 gauge. Its a auto & my 5'4" 120 pound wife shoots 3in nitro mags #4's from a pirogue squirrel hunting. 20-30 rounds. No need to thank me. Guns are like land, buy the best and they appreciate with time.

1 year ago, 95% of the suggestions would have been for a Remington 870 12 gauge. Remington decided to keep their operations in NY and rustled all the Internet outdoorsmens jimmies. Now, they are hated on by the OB.
I'd still recommend it. Get a 20 for your son and a 12 for you.
Inexpensive
Reliable
Proven
Easy to use
Great gun overall

870 is a good economy gun gun. A person who shoots a 20 gauge low brass is comparable to the kick of a extreme 12 gauge 3in nitro mag. So if kick and kill power isn't what you want out of a shotgun, then defiantly get a 870 20 gauge.

Do you know what the hell you're talking about? Why would anyone shoot squirrels with 3 inch 4 shoot. Is she shooting steel?
How do you figure a low brass 20 gauge is equal to 12 gauge in three inch mag?
Again, what the hell?
Am I misreading this post?

Maybe she shooting a long ways off?

Those 4s are hard on the teeth when you eat them though.

& why, because when you squirrel hunt from a pirogue in north & central La you have to be able to reach out and touch them. Different animal when it comes to conventual squirrel hunting. Full choke 3in nitro mags. Next question.

recoil is going to be affected by a number of criteria including the weight of the gun, the amount of shot being pushed down the barrel and the acceleration of the propellant.

Fair enough but how is a .20 low brass comparable to .12 3 inch

If you have shot a beretta xtreme you would know what I'm talking about. Go shoot a 870 low brass 100 times, then go shoot a xtreme high brass 100 times. Why would you ever shoot 100 times, maybe a skeet shoot. Or shoot 40 times sitting down in a pirogue.

Oh, you're talking about .20 pump and a semi auto .12.
Gotcha. I completely misunderstood what you were saying.
Sorry about that.

No prob. My wife & I own both. Big big difference in kick & price.

870-price & extreme-kick.

Fella's...it's Chicken. Price isn't the issue. Benelli Cordoba 20 gauge for him. Browning a5 for you.
Eta-for a consensus we'll need price range and semi-auto or pump. (I like semi-auto's)
Side by sides and over/unders are great for bird hunting and point well, but in a duck blind or dove shoot, I want all 3 shots.
