Not enough boat paddle strikes to the head for that grinnel to have been caught in NE LA.

They will destroy a spinner bait also.

It is said that not even gators will eat them.

They will, I've seen about a 4 ft gator with a small grinnel in its mouth before.

not bad eating if cleaned alive, cut into small chunks and deep fried.

My Grandpa would take one and cut the tail off to bleed it before cleaning. I know bleeding it down goes against cleaning alive but that's how he did it

I am sure if you don't wait too long it's fine. If you do, you end up with mush.

The kind that makes you think for about 5 seconds that you have the bass of a lifetime on your hook.

I've seen him (1968 or so) nail them through the head to a tree and a sharp hatchet to cut off the tail.

Grinnel, mudfish, bowfin, cypress trout, chopique, mud-bass….. these SOB’s go by many a name.

They will hit all kinds of chit but 90% of the ones I ever caught came on a white or white/chartreuse spinnerbait.

Only thing that swims in the Southeastern lakes more worthless or vicious is a snakehead.

( edit… them flying asian carp may be MORE worthless on second thought)

I've watched some YT videos of people catching and cooking grinnel and it always looks good but have never tried it. Honestly, been awhile since I've even caught one.

It's not bad, just not worth all the bullshite IMO. Gotta keep it alive, gotta clean that tough nasty SOB right before you cook it, etc.

Every time I hear or see a reference to these “kings” of fresh water, I remember my brother and I bass fishing. He threw a spinner bait at a swirl about 2 ‘ off the bank. Big explosion!
Bro sets the hook, pole bends big time.
“It’s going on da wall! It’s going on da wall”
He yells right up to when I net the biggest choupique I’ve ever seen
. After that I’d yell out going on da wall every time either of us got a bite.

I figure people who go through the trouble to clean and eat these are the same who clean and eat gar fish. My pops would do it with both, and it was damned good. I throw both back. Too much work. There are much better/easier fish to clean and eat.

I can't see the picture but if it is a bowfin most people in my area call them a mudfish. What part of the state are you in.

Fun to catch. Bad about breaking lines. If you catch one in a spot its best to just move on because there likely not much else around unless it is a Jack (pickeral)....which happens to be a personal favorite of mine.
